I'm glad a lot of people are talking about the pug story. This case needs a lot of pushback or this kind of story may become common in future. It really is a slippery slope once the government starts locking people up for causing offence.

In the case of the alt-right it's not exactly a joke, which is what fucks this whole thing up. Using a joking ironic tone to disguise actual political belief and action is part of what makes this whole discussion such a mess.

People need to make a distinction between society and government. As a society we need to make sure we don't fan the flames of intolerance. But putting that responsibly on the legal system to do it for us does not end well.

57:00 NO! All speech has to be legal, or else no speech is legal. Even the tired example of yelling fire in a crowded theatre. I think the crime here should be that they intentionally used a method that has a reasonably high chance of triggering a human stampede, which in turn has a reasonably high chance of heavy injury and death. The specific method they used to achieve the stampede (yelling "Fire"), is irrelevant and can't be illegal in a free society. There are other methods that exist that can achieve the same effect with similar consistency, such as firing a gun into the screen or ceiling, but whatever the method, what's is wrong is that they intentionally did something to trigger the likely consequence of a human stampede. Thinking of crimes with this lens means the example doesn't change, which is good. Effectively, yelling fire in a theatre still results in a crime being committed. But now it isn't the speech that is illegal, but its probable consequences. Having the controversy be "how likely is too likely?" is vastly preferable to "should there be limits to free speech?" because then we can collect and use past crime data to make informed and calculated conviction and sentencing decisions in order to sufficiently disincentive behaviours harmful to society, instead of relying on imprecise and unreliable senses of ethics and arbitrary sentencing.

I definitely agree with the success of "violent incentive" to deter bullies in school, but it doesn't have to be directly to the bully. When I was in 4th grade, there were 3 people who essentially bullied me, two of them were friends, and the third was the typical school-wide bully that nobody really liked. I never really did anything about this, but one day one of the two bullies was getting chased around by the "alpha bully", and they kept circling around my desk while doing so. The bully getting chased was kind of pudgy and clearly not in the condition to outrun the other guy. So I started getting annoyed, because I was trying to do some homework in silence. To try to stop it, I grabbed the back of the "alpha bully"'s shirt and essentially stopped him dead in his tracks. Of course, the alpha bully took some time out of his day to ensure I was properly put into the ground for that, but the bully that was being chased never fucked with me again.

About Count Dankula case: It's just remarkable that the book 1984 was written 70 years ago, yet predicted future England oh so well. Btw, I'm fairly certain that Orwell was writing it as a warning and not as a guide to follow, so can you please stop with your idiocy UK?

I Eat Garbage Totalitarianism doesn't just ramp up from 0-100 immediately. It's a gradual increase, taking little by little and the reason it gets as far as it does is because people dismiss the early stages as "irrelevant". Yeah ok, to blow up some shitposter getting arrested for a joke to the same level as an Orwellian nightmare is a little much....but it certainly has the very real possibility of being the starting point. It's not something to scoff at, especially since this is a LEGAL case which is all based on precedent.
@nightcawc6 жыл бұрын
You can't even carry around a simple knife in the fookin UK. It's so much further gone already.
@FryTV6 жыл бұрын
I Eat Garbage I know for a fact that I’m not blowing it out of the proportions, because it all works like in that quote from Martin Niemöller: "First they came for the Socialists...". Besides, what is more shocking to me, yet people don’t discuss it really, is that UK had that awful law since what 2003, or something like that. And no one cared about it, no one noticed that atrocious shit, no one protested against it when it was first made, because it is still a law, so nothing was made to stop this. And now a man is facing freaking prison, although if you read more about the case you’ll quickly learn that the whole case was made because some government official started it, not because some offended jew asked uk gov to investigate CD. That scares me the most: gov machine creates laws that no one could possibly follow, only to basically create work for itself, that no one asked and no one needs. If someone don’t understand or underestimate the importance of such laws, cases, role of government and freedom of speech in general, I strongly advice you to think about it more and also read a bit about ussr, red terror etc.

I've got a 2017 Toyota Camry with all those safety features like the lane checkers and what not and I can't stand it. More often than not, it's more intrusive than helpful. Actually, it's never been helpful. I eventually disabled most of it. Basically, it's there because people don't pay attention when they drive. Instead of creating features for people that don't pay attention when they drive, we should just not let people drive that don't pay attention when they do. Make driver's licenses harder to get, and when you get them, make them much easier to lose if you cause a wreck, espcailly if it's was caused from doing something like texting while driving. I've been driving for over 20 years and I've never caused a wreck or even gotten a ticket. I don't want to give up my ability to drive or feel afraid whenever I'm on the road just because other people suck at driving.
