----- ABOUT THE TUNE -----
"Hello Mary Lou" is a song written by U.S. singer Gene Pitney and Cayet Mangiaracina and performed by Ricky Nelson in English and German in 1961. It reached #9 on the Billboard music charts on May 28, 1961, although the other side of the single, "Travelin' Man", hit #1. In the United Kingdom, where it was the unrivalled A-side, it hit #2, and it was a hit in much of Europe, particularly Norway, where it spent 14 weeks at #1. The song features an influential guitar solo by James Burton, often cited by later guitarists such as Brian May. The song is from his sixth album called Rick Is 21.
----- ABOUT THIS PROJECT -----
After 2 successful projects with Enrico ("Peg O My Heart" and "Blackbird"), as well as one with Sonny ("Hello My Baby"), I though it would be nice to try something all together. The upbeat melody and straightforward barbershop arrangement for "Hello Mary Lou" seemed like the perfect choice. Sonny broguht in his buddy Dieter and we got the project rolling early April. Sonny recorded his lead track first, then I recorded bass, then Dieter the baritone and Enrico finished with the teror track. The videos took but a few days to be shot and within 3 weeks the project was ready! I hope there will be many more, this was the PERFECT collab for me!
----- CREDITS -----
► Original song by Gene Pitney and Cayet Mangiaracina
► Barbershop arrangement by David Wright
► Audio & video editing by Julien Neel (trudbol)
----- LYRICS -----
Passed me by one summer day
Flashed those big brown eyes my way
And oh I wanted you forever more
Now I'm not one that gets around
Swear my feet stuck to the ground
And though I never did meet you before
(Chorus)
I said "Hello Mary Lou
Goodbye heart
Sweet Mary Lou
I'm so in love with you
I knew Mary Lou
We'd never part
So Hello Mary Lou
Goodbye heart"
Saw your lips, I heard your voice
believe me I just had no choice
Wild horses couldn't make me stay away
Thought about a moonlit night
Arms about good and tight
That's all I had to see for me to say

No, I don't always sing bass in my collab projects. I've sung: - lead (Hello My Baby, Blackbird, I Got Rhythm, etc.), - tenor 1 (That's What Friends Are For, Am Brunnen vor dem Tore) - baritone (How Deep is Your Love) I'll be singing baritone again in an upcoming collab with Danny Fong, Andrew Kesler and Evan Sanders. Woops! The word it out! :p

It won't become any near mainstream because of the "decadent" society/music industry. (see "The TRUTH Why Modern Music Is Awful" by Thoughty2. Title is a bit clickbait, but it's worth it because he refers to scientific sources) But still: For those who get to know and experience it, it is not a very rare thing.

About 11 years ago, my 13-year-old self watched this video on repeat and repeat, not knowing in what fundamental way Barbershop would influence my music taste and even my life in one way or another, watching more and more Barbershop, slowly getting curious to try it out myself and then finding people to share that passion with, singing a trillion tags and even singing Hello Mary Lou which will always remind me where my journey had started. So THANK YOU for putting out all the videos! You are officially one of a few people who have led me to becoming a Barbershopper. By the way, is there any chance to sing tags with you on any Barbershop convention like the ones by BinG! Barbershop in Germany? I think many people would love to see you there

Hey! Thanks for your kind words, you made my day. I'd love to go to a barbershop convention at some point, yes. Feel free to email me (see my "About" page) when you go to an event. I've only been to one barbershop convention (Pittsburgh 2015) and seldom actually sing barbershop with others. Folks in France aren't too keen on the style, unfortunately.

@@JulienNeel Really sad that there's not too much going on in France but outside the Barbershop bubble I kinda feel it here, as well. It's really hard sometimes to get people into that stuff although it's quite easy and fun to try it out. I've sent you a message via your website. Hope, it went through!

I can only speak for myself: I took a dozen vocal lessons with an opera teacher, it helped a lot in understanding vocal production and common bad habits. Yes, vocal lessons are totally worth your money, but take them with an opera singer, not with a vocal coach. Many - not all - have no idea what they're talking about. Go for a teacher who is able to explain the physics & biomechanics of sound production, don't take a teacher who uses fancy metaphors and images to explain: singing is a science.

My range is what you hear in my videos. :) I'm probably a bari-bass, my range of comfort is G2 to F4. For these videos I push it a little, but I try to stick to these limits for bass / baritone and lead. The tenor tracks I usually sing in falsetto.

I am a Patreon contributer -- hope to expand the minimal contribution, but my retirement budget is TIGHT -- and I'm totally entranced by this quartet. Although "Enricator" has submersed himself in his music and has little spare time, this ol' lady is pushing 70 -- but very young at heart! -- and would love to hear an arrangement of Bobby Hebb's "Sunny," since that's my nickname. . . and sounds like "Sonny," so TWO of us would be happy! Any chance????

I think I talked to Trudbol a few years ago about this, but, to this day, I cannot even hear the baritone part in barbershop. (Sorry, Dieter) It's like I have this awareness that barbershop would sound completely wrong without the baritone, but, it might just be that I'm getting old and my hearing is messed up, but I listen to one barbershop song after another, and I cannot specifically hear the baritone part. I'm starting to think that the baritone in barbershop is like me as a bass guitarist: you don't notice it until it's not there.
@knotwilg3596
@knotwilg3596 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Rik, There are several reasons why my part is hard to hear (to some). First of all, the baritone is usually providing texture to the lead, while the tenor and bass are providing width to the vocal spectrum. The lead being slightly louder than the rest of the voices, in terms of post production (Sonny has a louder voice than me anyway) it is easy for the baritone to vanish. To make matters worse, or actually better, Sonny's voice and mine have similar tonality, at least in this arrangement and blend so well that they may, again, be heard as one voice. Now there are some parts where it's hard to miss my voice I believe and where you can get a glimpse of its texture and tonality: at 0:45 Enrico (tenor) and I start humming "n-dote n-dote", while Julien goes fast humming and Sonny keep singing lyrics. Enrico is obviously the higher one of us. Since he sings in a kind of falsetto, our voices are quite distinct and you should be able to pick my voice, the lower one. at 0:55 I join in with Julien's "dum doo be dum" while Enrico switches to lyrics. Obviously, in this case my voice is the higher one. Julien's voice has a kind of classical tone, by singing more in the back of his mouth, while I have a more mundane tone, singing to the front of my mouth, and this should again make it easy to distinghuish our voices. Hope this helps. Anything to make you hear me :))

The baritone or alto part are background parts that fill in the chords. It is one of those things where unless are specifically listening for it, you won't really hear it but if it weren't there, you would notice that something is missing. The same could be said for the baritone instrument in a band.
@worshipgeek
@worshipgeek 6 жыл бұрын
Baritone is the most challenging part to sing, because it has to provide the correct support for the harmony, and because the range is so similar to the lead, who is singling the melody, it needs to be careful never to overpower. Baritone is the only “inner voice” part in barbershop. The lead is most prominent, singing the melody, but the tenor sings above the other parts, and the bass below. An interesting fact is that, because of this, barbershop arrangers generally create the bass and tenor harmony parts to be somewhat melodic, since they remain exposed, and then just give the notes that fill in the chords to the bari. So, not only is it the hardest to hear, it’s generally the hardest to sing. Your final assessment is correct. A great baritone is not appreciated until he’s not singing. Dieter is great.

My thinking is that really good acapella singers make the baratone disappear because the harmonies blend so well. ...just a thought.

Thank you Edoardo, plenty more a cappella on my channel. :) If you'd like to help me continue making these, you can put $1 in my tip jar on PAtreon:! patreon.com/trudbol :) Any and all earnings help me cover production costs (copyright fees, arranger fees, hardware, software) and the countless man hours that go into making these videos.

I love watching you sing. You're definitely the most expressive one in the video.

I started following Sargent Sonny, and now this! Just too cool. You guys (and the other international quartets you've done) rock, seriously. Rock on!

Aw you guys made me smile. Brings back memories of me and my dad. You just can't really find this kind of music around very often.
