Scriabin and Rachmaninoff were good friends and colleagues from the young age, studied piano together at professor Zverev and later at Moscow Conservatory. Rachmaninoff did a tour with just Scriabin pieces after Scriabin died prematurely..

finally, scriabin!! he's a wonderful composer, but you should definitely tread carefully hehe. I'd recommend his 4th sonata (im current learning) as well as earlier piano sonatas. anything later than the 5th might be a bit unapproachable lol but up to you!

It all depends a bit on the understanding of art's purpose. Some expect especially music to be uplifting by beauty and lightness, others, that is me, think it should explore all aspects of existence. For example, sometime the sun shines out of my @$$, and I can't listen to darker stuff, more to like good time, high energy music. Or I am in a little bit of a bum mood, and I will listen to funny or enthusiastic stuff. But sometimes, when I am in a bit of a dark place, I can't stand the light stuff. Like when somebody died or so. Then I need to go through the deep valley and live through it, and let it out somehow, until I am emptied out. Remember Beethovens 9th, the finale comes so much greater after the trials and tribulations of the first movements. I once watched the 9th in Leipzig, in the famous "Gewandhaus", where J.S. Bach worked for example. And there they have a motto inscribed: _res severa verum gaudium_ i.e. _True Joy is a Serious Thing_ and I think that holds true in life.

@@agricolaurbanus6209 Yeah, I've seen so many people hating on pieces because they can't comprehend and then saying music should be about beatifulness, which is a very crude definition of music/art

Yes, Scriabin sometimes explores the dark side as well. Poem of Extasy is my favorite, but maybe spare it for Halloween or so!😁 In his symphonies, he has the cute, calm melodies, as well as the dramatic, the ecstatic and the tragic. He is all about dynamics and rich expression, you can find some Liszt, Chopin, Ravel notion as well as mad Beethoven spirit, like 5th or 9th, that all encompassing, universal art goal. But his smaller pieces are also plenty, and dynamic.

Thank you for reacting to this! It's my favourite! You have reacted to Scriabin before, it was Horowitz playing his short but fiery etude in D-sharp minor Op. 8 No. 12. That was a much earlier piece and with the 5th sonata Scriabin had already shaped his own language in music.

I think scriabin's fantasy in b minor or his piano sonata no 2 would have been a better introductory piece... but this piece is awesome too

The trouble with starting with pieces as early as those is that you would probably conclude that his music is simply similar to Chopin's; you would never guess how wildly original his style would become as it matured. I think this sonata or the Poem of Ecstasy are a good middle ground.

Lessgoo gidi! Scriabin is truly a treat! Edit: Not the best version of this piece imo. Would reccomend something like Ritcher instead. So if you do listen to it again I would reccomend listening to his recording. Another piece from Scriabin you should listen to is his Poem of extacy!

@@BBB-hi4hc A lot of wrong notes, too. I might never have heard a performance completely free of wrong notes, but there are usually fewer than this. This is certainly one of the troubles with the Scriabin sonatas. With, say, Brahms symphonies, almost every recording you could choose is probably decent at worst, and sufficient to determine what you think of the piece. Scriabin sonatas are so difficult to pull off that they're not like that.

Hi Gidi, could you please consider reviewing Scriabin's Symphony #1? It was one of his earliest works but in my opinion severely underrated and rarely performed. Philadelphia Orchestra with Westminster Choir has a good performance.

One of my top ten favorite solo pieces and something I someday hope to play. Scriabin basically continues where Chopin left off. Chopin was starting to explore complex chords and harmonies when he died. It's almost like he was reincarnated in Russia to continue his work. By the way, this performer missed a LOT of notes and the voicing was very muddy. Your buddy Daniil Trifonov is much much better. He also plays the Etude #5 Opus 42 which is a piece I do play and is a real gem.

the second scriabin sonata is great for getting into scriabin. the fourth sonata is also great but in my opinion must be pogorelich's performance from 1990

I see a lot of people recommending the Poem of Ecstasy, and it is a beautiful and exciting piece. But to my mind it's very similar to Sonata 5. I think in getting an overview of Scriabin, it might be worthwhile taking in one of the late sonatas. No. 5 is right at the edge. My favorite? Whichever one I just listened to! I'll suggest Sonata 7, but 6 or 9 would be good, too. Okay, 8 and 10, too. Any of them. I'll just say 7.

A young Polish pianist, Marta Czech, is posting performances in KZbin. She plays from memory and has an enourmous repertoire. Today, not long after you uploaded this, she uploaded a performance of Bach-Liszt, _Prelude and Fugue in A minor_. You might enjoy her videos.

Сыгранно весьма своеобразно, даже для произведений позднего Скрябина, причем с частыми ошибками. К тому же плохое качество записи.

This is not a good recording of this masterpiece to listen to. It’s full of blunders. Listen to Pietro Scarpini, Aaron Dunn, Alexander Lubyantsev, or Sviatoslav Richter play this sonata.
