Everyone talks about what a great comedian Leslie Nielsen was, but what a lot of folks don't realize is that he _wasn't_ a comedian. He'd already had a long career as a dramatic actor, and hadn't thought of doing comedy. But he was approached for this film, as well as Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, and Peter Graves - all dramatic actors. And the main problem was that the actors wanted to _be funny,_ which was NOT what the directors wanted. They told the actors they had to play their parts perfectly straight, or else it wouldn't work. And they were right! (Also, the film is based almost word-for-word on an old movie called "Zero Hour".)
@richardsturges2736
@richardsturges2736 3 жыл бұрын
Most people think its based on Airport, but no its Zero Hour. So glad someone else knows this. The writers record late night commercials to spoof, and fell asleep. Zero hour was recorded and they watched it and then they made this. Ive seen Zero hour and its actually a decent drama. Watch Leslie Nielsen in Forbidden Plant, which is basically Shakespeare's The Tempest.

If you are confused about why Kareem Jabbar is hiding his identity in this movie, it's because the film is a parody of a 1957 film "Zero Hour". In Zero Hour, NFL star Elroy "Crazy Legs" Hersch plays the co-pilot, despite having no prior acting experience. He's basically in the role of a pilot for no reason, and there is no reference to his NFL career. So in this film, the joke is that Abdul-Jabbar is trying to just play the role of a pilot, but everyone keeps recognizing him as an NBA player, and he ultimately can't keep that aspect hidden.

It's a credit to the writers that they could reuse one joke, the literal interpretation, over and over but still keep it funny. Also, the spear in the wall is a callback to the driving scene when they were being chased by Indians. Two jokes people often miss are when the plane crashes through the window near the beginning, a woman throws her baby in the air as she's driving for cover. And whenever they show an exterior shot of the plane the sound is of propellers, not a jet.

Wonderful Science Fiction Classic. The Special Effects are out of an animation tradition rather than the kind of CGI we are used to seeing, but they actually hold up well. Especially the effects used for 'the monster' and those used to portray the alien installation. It is also fun to see Leslie Nielson playing such a straightforward character, really a sort of prototype of Star Trek's Captain Kirk in a lot of ways. So different from this 'Airplane' comedy style he's become so known for. Robbie the Robot was also instantly iconic. Amazing design, especially with the neon lighting and his droll humor.

My favorite zany comedy! A joke a minute, at least! And being in a family of pilots sure helps =D My dad is a private pilot, flight instructor, and an experienced aerobatic pilot. He says pretty much anyone with a pilot's license could get a jet liner safely on the ground (for the people, the plane would most likely get messed up), with a little talking down, especially where the instruments are. Jet liners are apparently made stupidly easy to fly, so they don't need to train pilots as long to fly them. Comforting! Still, the safest way to travel (before corona)

I saw this movie some 35 years ago and its jokes with literal interpretations of what others say inspired me to create one. One day I was up on the nearby mountain, close to a water reservoir locally know as the Alvao Dam (or just "the Dam", being the only one around...), when a car stopped and the driver addressed me for directions: “Could you tell me how to get to the Dam?" They were precisely *coming* from the dam, so I realised they hadn't recognised it as such. (They were probably expecting a big dam, when in fact it's a rather small one.) So I said: "You have to go back, you just passed it." "You mean, that lake a few km back is the Dam?" Me (deadpan): "No. That's water. The Dam is the wall preventing the water from flowing down the mountain." They just looked at me in disbelief but I managed to remain serious. :D

I saw this on either Cinemax or HBO about five months after it hit the theaters. This is just one ridiculously side-splitting movie that over 40 years later, is just as funny the first time as it the 21st time. It just never gets old. The fact that Lloyd Bridges, Leslie Nielsen, Peter Graves and Robert Stack did everything straight-faced, mad it even funnier. Check out "POLICE SQUAD (In Color)". It was a series ABC aired in the summer of 1982, it also starred Leslie Nielsen and is the same as "AIRPLANE" just with a police dept. A Joyous Noel and a Cool Yule to you and yours.
