Maybe the book makes it clearer but, in the film, one interesting question is just how morally bankrupt was the warden he before Andy met him? To what extent did Andy's presence just enable him to pursue tendencies he always had, and to what extent did the man's efforts to keep himself sane and human in prison, which blurred the boundaries between guards and inmates, actually have a tempting, corrupting influence on Norton? We do know prison definitely corrupted Andy to some extent; there's a scene where he flat-out admits it - and, really, one can easily be tempted to sympathise with him. Not that I necessarily agree with this statement, but it's very easy to imagine oneself, in Andy's position, seriously asking the question: if following all society's rules got him treated as a criminal anyway, why bother to keep following them? It reminds me of Les Miserables - the two key protagonists in that, Javert and ValJean, were warder and prisoner, respectively, but at the end of the day they were *both* victims of what the prison system does to those who have contact with it - on either side of the bars. The infamous Stanford Prison Experiment was a brutal confirmation of this.

I love when christians ignore the old testament because it’s… well.. you’ll know if you’ve read it. I’m pretty sure the character of Jesus said in Mathew 5:17-18 that he wasn’t there to abolish any of the laws from the old testament. So what then? Did a maximally omniscient and powerful deity just make a bunch of mistakes in the early days but then specifically neglect to correct them when given the opportunity? If you would like to focus on the new testament, no problem. That’s where it says slaves obey your masters, even the cruel ones and introduces thought crime. Additionally, it has the most ‘vindictive’ thing in the whole story. The idea that someone could be punished infinitely for committing a finite crime. As to depravity, I find it hilarious that would be the first assumption attributed to a complete stranger who simply questions the beliefs of themselves and others. If this feels like an attack or that your being mocked, then I recommend more questions in your day to day life. Oh and by depravity, if you mean homosexuality, thinking all genders should have equal protections under the law, eating shellfish, wearing mixed fabrics, and utilizing the pull out method? Then yes, I am a firm supporter of depravity as defined in the stories of the bible. The movie The Shawshank Redemption has the best use for the bible that I’ve yet come across. Cut a hole in the pages and use it to hide your rock hammer.

The New Testament isn't some kind of retcon, God at one point considered a lot of that crap acceptable, including rape, genocide, killing of babies, pillaging, slavery, punishing kids for their Father's actions, sexism, racism, need I go on. Does that sound like a loving God to you? Also I thought God didn't change, all I see is more contradictions. Jesus himself taught from the Old Testament, are you suggesting that Jesus was wrong?. I was a Christian for years, you either accept the depravity of the Old Testament as morally acceptable, or go what I did and get the fuck away from that bs.

This movie's message of enduring hope during even the darkest times is beautiful. I love watching people's responses to it. It's one of my favorite films, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thank you for your reaction.

For me, the true message of this amazing film is that freedom is in the mind. Andy, a prisoner in body, refused to ever be a prisoner in his mind, while Brooks and Red, when they got out they were free in body, but still prisoners in their minds.

That short musical cue when Morgan Freeman is walking along the rock fence...with the wide angle shot...Just perfect. I mean it's probably one the best few seconds of music I've heard in a movie. I'm sure the entirety of the film that came before it also helped.

Morgan Freeman IS a one-of-a-kind. Great in everything. Esp this. Usually I’m not a fan of Tim Robbins acting. But he’s perfect for this part. Timeless movie with a great ending. I LOVE movies that end well. They’re not common.

Another great reaction dude. Like many I adore this film and they will rightly highlight the outstanding script, performances, direction, cinematography, score and source material which are all worthy of every praise they get. I love all the symbolism in this film, two good examples are: The grass is always green on the other side whenever you see outside the wall's which isn't subtle but often missed. One of the more subtle ones is the lighting when Andy is talking to Red just before he escapes, it shows Andy in the light and Red still in the shadow which symbolises Andy's impending freedom and Red having to remain incarcerated.

This is probably one of my favourite adaptations from book to screen. They didn't change a whole lot but it's condensed; there's different wardens over Andy's time in Shawshank instead of just one for example. I think the only 2 big changes are what happens to Tommy & the ending which is more ambiguous than the movie.
@indiatastic3 жыл бұрын
What happens to tommy in the book?
@Elessarion303 жыл бұрын
@@indiatastic In the novella the warden offers Tommy a deal; basically if he keeps his mouth shut about what he knows then he'll be moved to a minimum security prison with privileges like being able to see his wife & child. So while Andy is in solitary confinement, Tommy takes the deal and gets moved away. The warden also implies that he used his connections to get the real killer released on parole so Andy won't be able to track him down easily.

The film has two great scenes of misdirection the first is the night before Andy escapes, Red thinks Andy might commit suicide and the film sets that up like we’re going to find that Andy lost the will for the fight only to find he’s escaped and the second moment is with Red contemplating going back to the prison, by thinking he will buy one of the guns from the pawnshop, then he goes into the store and we’re meant to think he’ll do what brooks wanted to do Then he buys a compass instead, and uses it to find Andy’s note and his way back to him. great directing.

I graduated from high school and rolled over into college in 1994, right as this movie was coming out. So six months later it was on the movie channels, so one of my memories of this movie is seeing it in my dorm room, being blown away by that ending, and then watching it like 50 more times because it was always freaking on.

Mel, this movie was AFI's #1 movie of the 20th century. Everything you love about this movie comes down to one man: Stephen King. Darabont stuck to the original novella almost word for word, right down to the last line: I hope.

Actually Stephen King does like Shawshank Redemption. He stated that the film would have been perfection if it weren't for the perfectly circular hole that Andy dug in the wall. The perfectly circular hole didn't seem realistic

I think one of the reasons they (or Steven King) settled on the name Shawshank is because of the shank part. One, it can mean a thin cut of meat, and that's how a lot will treat you in prison, and two, to be shanked is to be stabbed with an improvised knife, aka: a shiv, another thing that happens in prisons.
@FeaturingRob3 жыл бұрын
Stephen King actually loved 'Shawshank' and 'Stand By Me'...he DIDN'T like 'The Shining'. Because King liked 'Shawshank' so much, he practically gave the rights of 'The Green Mile' to Frank Darabont to adapt and direct, since Darabont did such an amazing job on 'Shawshank'.

To be fair, everything in those days was written for Tom Hanks. While he was shooting Apollo 13 in 1994, he was sent the script for Twister. He didn't think he was right for the lead but felt that his Apollo co-star, Bill Paxton was. He passed it along to Bill. Paxton got the part.

Tim Robbins was also good in “IQ” with Meg Ryan and Walter Matthau (as Albert Einstein). And Morgan Freeman is one of the best actors on the planet. Lean On Me, Invictus, the Christopher Nolan Batman’s and Driving Miss Daisy are real highlights. And the guy proved here and in some commercials that he has an incredible voice. As a guy who aspires to be a voice actor, he’s an inspiration. I actually picked some of his narration from this movie to use during a voice acting course I took. That and Sean Connery’s intro to Highlander. LOL.

Red was Irish in the books, Morgan Freeman mentions this in the movie as a joke. Brooks was truly heartbreaking , I keep thinking about the car almost hitting him. Brooks was released from prison 11 years before Andy escaped, meaning he was released in 1955 after serving 50 years. The first commercial car was released in 1886 but wasn't widely available to the public until 1908, 3 years after he'd already been in prison. Brooks never saw a car in person before. Morgan Freeman is the man, while it's not stated in what year Red went to jail or why in the movie. In the books he's a bit darker, his wife has a large life insurance policy, so he cuts the brakes of her car. On this day, she happened to be riding with a friend that bought her child In terms of when Red's age, he said he spent 40 years there, if we make this age relative to how old Morgan Freeman was when the film came out (57) he was around 17.
