The probe series is campy fun video and for those of us who owned this - nostalgia filled ... PTSD. Everything experienced was a daily experience for those of us and in our younger days , you dont need $4-5 a gallon gas, a 25mpg tops car, and one that breaks down in an infinite amount of ways. Theres a reason the mechanics turn off the lights and close the bay doors when they see these roll up. It doesnt help that they got a few years on them and then FAST & FURIOUS came out which I'm sure killed most of them. When one is gutted out, on lowered coils, it is described as steering on rails. The VRIS will cause issues eventually. ProbeTalk forums is where past victims (owners) hang out. Mine jumped a tooth on the belt and sounded like hell unleashed coming out of the throttle body. Do the KLZE swap, underweight pulleys, cat delete, lower, gutted, turbo and have the funnest 10 miles of your life before it blows. Also it was interesting that you could enter a diagnostic mode in these cars by shorting a connection under the hood and the check engine light flashes out all the codes. Oh and beware, if a Plymouth Laser, Pontiac Sunfire, Nissan 240sx, Honda civic, Talon Eclipse, Ford Sho, Acura Integra or Prelude pulled up beside you, it was required by unspoken law that you had to race on green.

I wish we were closer so you could drive our stock, low mileage, well-running purple '94 GT. The wife and I regularly take it on long, winding 3-4 hour drives and push it hard. You got a small glimpse of how fun this car can be. I hope that gives you encouragement to soldier on! Also, take it to a Cars & Coffee (and maybe film the adventure!). It's always a surprise hit. We've realized that it's always one of the weirdest cars there, but everyone that stops to talk says, "I had one of these" (or knew someone that did). What was once ubiquitous is now somehow unique. I had a '93 Probe GT that my dad bought new and I inherited around 1997 and drove until 2003. It was an awesome car that was a blast to drive. I remember the check engine light always coming on, or if I was lucky enough to not have it on, it would always kick on around 3000 RPM. Without fail it was always an O2 sensor that was either bad or going bad. It never altered the way the car ran, so after the 4th or 5th time getting it fixed I just let it be. Maybe some dead knowledge of mine from 20 years ago can help a little. I watched one of your early videos with the car and you mentioned the oil burning smell, I knew right away that it was a valve cover gasket leaking. I had that issue as well as the overheating from a bad water pump. Thanks for fixing this old thing up, it brings back some good memories.

Fantastic! Looks like you got it! Next: make it pretty. I’ve had great luck fogging in missing clear coat using 2K clear coat in spray cans. Chip off any flaky bits. Wet sand it lightly. Cover the entire car with plastic sheet because it gets everywhere! Cut the sheet away from the areas you want to clear. Paint it. Let sit for 2 days then Wet sand it with 1000, 1500, 2000 grit and buff it with a wool pad. Spend a little time on it and you’ll get....almost professional results. It’s worth the hassle. I’ve done this to 3 cars with great results. 2 of them were metallic black Honda Accords, so it will work on a dark color like your purple Probe.

@pgtmr27133 жыл бұрын
I think your over heating is related to ignition and the misfire code. When my coil was bad it caused random overheating. It may have been rich or lean to compensate for the ignition. Something to keep an eye on. I overheated once really fast, it blew the little black tank up. I had to plug hoses with screwdriver handles to get it home with some fresh water. I finally replaced the coil which I knew was bad. It never overheated after that. Also a Mitsubishi electric part. The problem can come and go randomly, could get worse with more misfiring. Drive local, listen for any stumbles. Almost everything relates back to the ignition system. It's only one coil, located inside the distributor, where it gets hot, on a vehicle that frequently hits 7k rpm. It's about $30, easy to replace. 20-30 minutes for a first timer. Scratch a line, distributor to engine, so you can line it back up to where it was. Fixing the VRIS will make the car feel like it's more powerful by keeping the torque up.

@ssanmor3 жыл бұрын
I love your videos, the enthusiasm you are putting on that car as I feel very identified, after 1.5 years restoring mine. The valves you have replaced are VRIS (no noticeable improvement in performance but clears the codes) and the ones related to the newer EGR system check using a MAP sensor. Mine doesn't have them, but both of us have two additional valves that control the EGR itself. They are under the intake manifold, at the rear, and they usually go bad too. Did you notice that engine hesitation during hard acceleartion at 2000-3000 rpm is gone? Also, does it shake a bit when letting the gas off an on in slow traffic? Mine has a bit of both things, and no codes. I am quite puzzled about that and I am suspecting my EGR doesn't fully close but who knows? Another area of interest of this cars is the left rear brake caliper. It tends to stick so parking brake doesn't release properly. I replaced mine to solve this problem, but now I have to periodically tighten an internal screw so the hand brakes continues operating (that is, just before MOT).
@HelloRoad3 жыл бұрын
Really glad you're enjoying my vids!! :) Thanks for the suggestions! A few others have also suggested replacing those other valves under the intake manifold. I guess I should've done that when the shop replaced the intake manifold gasket! 🤦♂️Maybe that's the next step. There is definitely still a vacuum leak, idles really low, and like yours shakes at idle. At stoplights I try to keep the RPMs up!
@ssanmor3 жыл бұрын
@@HelloRoad Well, you really need to perform basic adjustments to the car. Maybe you already know, but you need to set it to test mode (by joining the TEN and GND pins together in the diagnostics connector). In order to verify that you have successfully set the car to test mode, turn on contact (engine not yet started) and if you **slightly** touch the throttle butterfly it should activate the radiator fans. If you radiator fan is ON without touching anything, loosen the TPS and turn to the position when it JUST turns off. That's the PCM way to indicate that it detects a change in the idle switch. There is a specific calibration procedure for the position of the TPS so idle is detected properly (you will need feeler gauges). Also in that mode, you need a strobe gun to adjust your ignition timing to -10ºBTDC (there are marks above the crank pulley and you loosen the distributor and slightly turn it to get that). Finally, you need to adjust the idle adjustment screw on top of the butterfly to get around 600 rpm in test mode. You may need to open it a bit more (turning it anti-clockwise) but not too much or you will fool mixture and it will set lambda codes. If you need more info, just ask! But the above adjustments are basic for this car to run properly. If you want, send me your email and we can discuss in more depth. UPDATE: Yesterday I found a broken a/c pipe, so it looses all the gas. Another thing to fix...

@ssanmor3 жыл бұрын
@@HelloRoad These solenoids can be got very cheap from aliexpress (like 5 USD each), and they are exactly the same. I just replaced 3 of them weeks ago. So buy a bunch of them. As for VRIS not working, check the check-valve under the manifold, it is usually broken creating a vacuum leak and preventing the VRIS and possibly the EGR to operate properly. Easy to test if you have a hand pump. Do you need vacuum schematics for the car?

Sometimes the cooling fans can spin but the fan clutch is worn so they don't turn fast enough to properly cool the vehicle...

You will not know till you hit the long hill again. I do know that 93 burns a few degree's cooler. Really helps with cooling at higher elevations.

Yep they are supposed to run on premium only AND it's one of the few cars where cheap gas will drop the revs too fast. Premium fuel burns longer as well as cooler. Premium fuel, drop the clutch faster it won't get all neck snappy.

Very interesting for you to drive a car that is exactly as old as I am. 1997

Damn. Never been this early. EDIT: yeah, probes do not like long drives at all. They do get hot and sometimes overheat on 2-3+ hour drives. If you do ever get it in hard driving shape, it's a blast. You'll hear a lot of 'handles like it's on rails' thrown around, but i do know 95-97 didn't have as tight of suspension.

Well, my Probe like long drives. I did 2500 Kilometers with a 96 4-cylinder from Germany to Spain two years ago. No probe-lem! Still runs and runs. Some say that the small motor with 116 hp (there is the 16V and the 24V) has less problems with overheating. But the valve cover gasket seems to be a issue in both cars. In three years I had to change it two times already. First time I used silicone to isolate it better but after aprox. 10.000 kilometers I saw that the rubber was cut, so I thought that this might be because I used too much silicone. Second time I put a new valve cover gasket, I did it without the silicone. But recently I discovered that the rubber was cut again. So the fault might have been that I havent used the right torque nm force with my wrench. The right quantity is 20 nm. Too much force might cut the rubber, too little might lead to oil leaks. (sry for my english, Im Spaniard).

@@MARC-FENIX you're right! I've had 2 16v and 1 24v. I had 1 16v overheat, but it was a very long drive in about 108 Fahrenheit. The 16v i4 takes pretty well to turbo as well. And yeah, these engines just have valve cover gasket issues, just gotta keep up on them. The 2g ford probe actually won a couple of gt endurance races, and placed high in another. I feel that a lot of the heat issues now, especially in the v6 are mainly from age and carbon build-up. Also, your English is pretty good, no worries :)

I had a 97 and suspension was plenty stiff enough for me. Handled great. Best front drive car ive driven. Gave mine up when the clutch pedal rod broke but it went to 2 guys that were gonna fix it. Ford actually put taller springs in the last 2 years to soften the ride due to complaints. You can really see the difference if you compare the wheel well gap between the earlier ones.
@MARC-FENIX3 жыл бұрын
@@butterbeantx I always thought that my car looked too high for a sportscar and that the wheel well gap was too big. So I changed the original springs with H&R 35mm springs. Now it looks better and handles even better in curves with almost no inclination to the sides. Still suspension is comfortable enough though.
