it's okay to say "the Deftones sound a bit like Helmet" because they did. They don't anymore but they did. Helmet was one of those bands that influenced greatly the mid-to-late 90's metal scene. Especially a little thing. John Stanier's snare drum sound and style of playing were influential to a whole generation of rock drummers. As was their guitar tuning and sound. Helmet still kicks ass.

"I Know" is one of three songs from the "Betty" album done in "Drop-D" tuned down a half-step (low to high: Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb). "Speechless" and "Overrated" were the other two.

Love both drummers snare sound honestly. Stainer's was higher pitch, I think he used a steel or aluminum snare. This is a brass 7x14. Stainer was a bit groovier as well, both snares sound great though.

@TheGreatEcstasy, this may be sloppy due to the limitations and lack of dynamics of the recording, don't assume that all of a sudden they forget to play this music super tight, because it's the only it can be played, super tight staccato riffing and odd times signatures. it's great stuff

@arak2004 It's kind of difficult, to split the vocals, cause often a hole song either contains the raw vocals & Hamilton does not have the same agressive raw voice anymore or the more listenable (for some) tracks with the "singing". Sometimes there is a bit of both sorts of vocals and maybe a present member could shout out the raw singing parts, but Hamilton is the boss & frontman, don't think he leaves the vocals and just sings the softer vocals alone. But he dont sing as raw as before I agree.

haha this stuff was decent for it's time, but john stanier has gone on to join one of the most innovative bands around. Check out Battles if you haven't yet.

That's "Drop-D" tuned down an additional step (low to high: C G C F A D). On that note (and yes, the pun is intended), I have to ask: old and new alike, do their songs sound better that way, or am I crazy?

As one of the biggest helmet fans to ever roam the earth, this is sad to me. Without John Stanier and Henry, Helmet becomes merely avg. The drums completely lack the timing and precision, just a muddy mess.J.Staniers drums IMHO defined Helmet,coupled with Pages riffs and intense vocals it was as precise as rock music could get, an unstoppable force, yet to be matched by any band since.IdK were the hell page found these drummers but they are not worthy to even smell J.Staniers soiled underwear!

It maybe somewhat tight and Heavy, but you have obviously never seen the original helmet live,like I said before they were far better then anything at the time or since as it pertains to "tight and heavy".This lineup is avg with the exception of Page of course.Its the little things missing espcially on drums, that fail to elevate this to true "helmet" status.Even how the drums are mic'd, weak,Hey its fine you like it,i use too as well,I just choose to listen to the far superior older recordings.

well, i think they'd be an awsesome instrumental band if paige has issues with singing.

+David Copeland Page Hamilton is still a beast of a musician and singer too.Helmet will have a new album out this year at the end of 2016. I can't wait to hear it either.
@arak200414 жыл бұрын
Slayer sounds like Sinatra, if you cough in the middle of saying it. Hey, didnt these guys get some new emo singer that killed the band? I dont understand why Paige just didnt sing. I mean, any one of these guys could have yelled, as helmet was never known for vocal dynamics. Use a present member to yell, let paige sing. If we want an annoying high pitched voice with repetitive choppy guitars, we have the last Janes Addiction album.
