17 year old Dan gets embarrassed when he goes to the doctor. Not because he is deaf but because he still takes his mum with him. But Dan doesn't have to: www.buzz.org.uk/mylifemyhealth

I was signing to this woman in the opposite hospital bed, she was Deaf and I was hearing. The doctors came by and said 'Why are they waving their arms around?' Ignorant doctors

And what a sweet and helpful mum! Although this situation is horrible and embarrassing. I am hard of hearing, and I am often left awkward and behind in conversations, and people are often impatient, and don't repeat, or say nevermind. In a group, most will exclude me without trying, because they find my interruptions to understand rude, or just ignore my problem, while the group conversation goes on anyway.

What a pain! They should have tried to offer these services earlier, before you had to come with your mum... But that is a huge problem. If you didn't have your mum, you would have trouble with every part of this process, like picking a doctor and arranging the appointment in the first place. I'm sorry our world is not built for the ease and convenience of so many, including deaf people. Thanks for your great video and for showing us what life is like.

I started going to the doctors on my own at about 17. My workers because i was in an accident said I needed to learn and after awhile I became a self-advocate and my mom didn't need to hold my hand. She still at times asks what i talk about at appointments even tho i'm 25!

As an adult deaf/hh person I wish that medical professionals would be better trained at how to recognize deaf/hh people's needs and perform their duties accordingly...as well as provide the technology to assist patients in navigating waiting rooms and such. P. S. I took my hearing sons to the doctor's when they teenagers too... it's partially a mom thing... gotta take care of their babies...

We have one at my doctors surgery. It's really handy. We also have a screen in the waiting room that flashes a light and then shows your name up on the big to screen. It's really helpful, as I am profoundly deaf in both ears!
