I think that when the single-word 帮 is used, it often means to help somebody by doing something *for* them (rather than *with* them). So if we say: 你双手里有行李, 我来帮你打开门 that would mean: "You have luggage in both hands, let me open the door for you." ( It doesn't mean that the door is too heavy and you can't open it alone without my help. )

I was just wondering about this very difference, between 帮忙 and 帮助! I used to say 谢谢你的帮忙。But I noticed that the locals on my weChat quarantine group chat say 谢谢你的帮助. Now I know 帮忙 is not a noun and I've been using the wrong word.
