A1M Peterborough services was a lifesaver for me for 3 years when I was an undergrad driving between Essex and York. Maybe it's just Peterborough, but I can confirm that there were MANY strange people there 😂

Because he's wearing a retainer. Typically, you wear retainers just at night. But if he's having his teeth realigned, they'll be on constantly until the teeth are in the correct position. When wearing a retainer, it is advised to brush teeth after eating or drinking anything that isn't water so maybe he didn't want the hassle of drinking alcohol wearing a retainer as that would have meant cleaning retainer afterwards and brushing his teeth. It is also typical to wear retainers after braces are removed until the gum has tightened and no resistance in the teeth moving.
