Being a guy I don't think I'm the best to commentate. But on a side note , normally Kandyan Saree is the "formal" one worn for the ceremony and all the traditions. You could wear the Indian saree or a Gown later for the "going away" or reception.

Most North Indian brides do not wear sarees Most brides wear Lehenga or Gujarati sarees. But all South Indian brides mostly wear red or colorful saris especially they are adorned with kanchiwaram saris. Indian brides do not wear white saris very much. These white Indian saris are mostly worn by Sri Lankan Pahatha Rata (Low Country) brides but for the second day homecoming ceremony all Sri Lankan Sinhala brides wear red sari or osari.
