I attended my first Worship God conference in 2019. Since that conference we have slowly/steadily been introducing new songs from Sovereign Grace, CityAlight, the Gettys, and occasionally one or two others. This has allowed us to phase out songs that were shallow and/or not biblical.

Great podcast and teaching. I love your emphasis on the theological truths of the song while remembering that music is more than a recitation of facts.

As I think back, the songs that have touched my heart the most, those that have brought me to tears, have been the most theologically rich. They have been the songs that have shown Christ in all His glory, and my heart has responded. One of my current favorites, “All of Our Tomorrows,” brought me to tears the first time I heard it because it reminded me that God does hold my tomorrows, and I can trust him completely. So yes, theology and experience can definitely go together.

For about a year and a half our small church has changed our song diet. We practice news songs on Wednesday nights until learned and then add them to the Sunday worship list. Our congregation is Hispanic and many songs are awkwardly translated or the quality of music is not the same but we are slowly improving. Every time I have felt resistance to improvement I have said that every generation should produce biblical worship to God that flows out of their walk with God in their time.

This was a great episode as my church is currently going through this transition. I love having theologically rich songs that clearly present the gospel in such a way that it is a very vertical worship experience that can also be a very emotional experience once you understand why you are singing the words that you are singing. I have nothing against singing emotionally charged songs, and I think you said this at some point during the episode, but when you rely on the emotions to carry you you lose the richness of what worship can be. Thank you for putting out this podcast, it has been a blessing to me and my ministry.

I would also add, don't be afraid to make a more drastic change if it is necessary. We made a "cold turkey" change away from music from certain publisher's about 2 years ago. I thought it would be a difficult change, to my pleasant surprise. I got only positive feedback, no one said "why don't we sing _________ anymore?" Those songs comprised about 25-30% of our diet.

I have a novel Idea, Since music and singing is supposed to be worship why not praise and bless the lord throughout the entire worship service and let the Holy Spirit lead you as to what he wants you to sing? Like I said a novel idea. Taking the time to allow the spirit to move within the congregation and maybe even entering the other side of the veil, WOW! entering into the spirit and not just an emotion fest during worship, Who would of thought?
