Dog lover here. Have you had him since he was a puppy? If so, his fear is most likely due to lack of socialization. If he hasnt seen EVERYTHING as a puppy, that could be the reason of his fear. My dog was introduced to many things as a puppy- mop, vacuum, noises, people on wheelchairs, umbrellas, etc. But recently we got a stationary bike. Hes never seen one. Hes quite hesitant towards it. This is how to help him: First bring out an object he is scared of. Let him observe from a distance. If he shows calm behaviour (No cowering, no tucked tail, no pinned ears, and no 'trying to make himself look smaller'') immediately reward him (depending on what your dog likes: food, play, praise) Next, start closing the distance. If he is still calm, reward Remember, NEVER force him to encounter domething he is scared of. This will just make his fear worse. If he retreats to a "safe place" like his bed, couch, under the table, let go and try again later. Recognize small changes. Even just a glance at the object without showing fear is a win. Mark all calm behaviour. Even if the process is slow, stay calm. If you begin to become anxious or mad, your dog will likely pick up on your emotions and you will make two steps back.
