Күн бұрын

Are they ever done? Well we thought we had the 413 coupe dialed in and at least ready for a drive to Columbus, OH for this year’s Goodguys event. In this episode we share some of the problems we had and how we limped it to the event. After that,one adjustment was made to get it back on the road. However, the evolution of the car is about to happen in our Part 2 series of upgrades over the winter with Greening Auto Company! Stay tuned for how we turn this hot rod from a close trip driver to a long haul road tour car!

The correct fuel PSI, float levels, needles and seats are a must. The right fuel pump and pressure gauge solved my issues.

Just a couple of observations If I can indulge. * you mentioned a few times the ambient heat, and how hot you were, even opening the screen to get some more air * high humidity * the decreasing performance as you travelled, to the point of needing to stop multiple times * discussions on fuel supply, condensation on carbs etc. Now, I'd expect the engine to be operating best in the 165-185 temp range, however, based on the above points, noting your bonnet that has neat fit around engine, but very limited ability for heat to escape. Fresh air at front of engine bay, but no air out at firewall, just a trapped space, with heat rising, and nowhere to really go. Not particularly surprised that rear carbs are showing symptoms of heat soak. The hotter they (and the fuel system) get, the more they're struggling. I also have a hemi in a 34 3 window, and would suggest either some louvres in bonnet, or take it off on the hot days, as I expect you will see thi problem again. Great car, awesome to see you trying to work through the issues. Cheers

Threw my solid state fuel pump away today after watching this and installed a Holley red with my malpassi regulator set at 2.5lbs for my strombergs and my issues are gone! Found I was making pressure at idle but on the hwy it was dropping to zero. Just couldn’t keep up.

Something to consider about my high rise flathead build. Been having drivability issues after about 30 minutes on the rd. It runs cold and my intake condenses so now you’ve got me wondering. Thanks for taking us along!

We are making changes over the winter. It looks cool but we are tired of it not running right or being able to do road trips. You may consider putting a higher thermostat in it also to try and raise the temperature.

@@OpposingCylinders well I got up early this morning, watched your video and went out and diagnosed my pickup. My fuel pump is dropping off pressure. Gonna break down and get a Holley this morning and regulate it down. I’m running 59a style heads, but they’re setup for thermostats at the top of the water necks. I tried using them early spring because I wasn’t heating at all in cold weather, and crazy thing ran cooler. If all goes good I’ll see you at the triple crown. Good luck

Yeah, it is like the intakes want to frost up, create more condensation without the additional heat. Big changes coming to this car over the winter. Stay tuned.

The 413 is still a bit of a rebel, however, she looks and sounds amazing. I hope to make the Kazoo Street Rod Nationals in Sept. I have rented swap meet space in the past to do rustic art work on hoods and such but not this year.

My favorite Ford.....BUT! Why would you even think about putting louvers in your roof? (or on top of your hood) And, one of the coolest things about a '34 is the louvers in the hood side panels? Where'd they go? What up with that?

Cool car as always. Have to ask what temp thermostat were you running to begin with.? Im thinking you could run a 185° and a 376 gear and you would have been alright..

Talk to us about life with a louvered roof insert? Looks so cool, but is there a downside?
@OpposingCylinders
@OpposingCylinders Жыл бұрын
So far, no huge downside. We drove some in the rain but no downpour yet. At night sitting outside we will just put the cover on it. No insulation on the roof allows more heat to come inside.

Actually 180-195 is perfect! ...even 200 is not going to hurt it. You don't want it to run really cool on any engine. I run a mechanic fan with a shroud. Never have an issue. Just don't like the look of an electric fan hanging off the radiator...just me.😉

Early hemi sparkplug tubes do not fit "tight!" The plug wire terminal itself is what makes the tight connection. I question the skill level of your mechanic.
@OpposingCylinders
@OpposingCylinders Жыл бұрын
It was the terminal inside the plug wire that was loose. They were not even snapping or tight on the plug. The wire was not the issue in the end either way.

I think this car is cursed. It is a bad luck car for you and I think you should sell it. Tell you what, I'll just come get it from you and you can move on to another car. 😁😁😁 Seriously though you're right, it is a bad car and I just love it. I'm building a 392 powered '34 3 window and hope it comes out even half as nice as your car. I have a question and not trying to be a jerk or arogant or anything like that. Do you not work on your own cars? I've been building hot rods since the early '70s and while not a professional, I have built many cars over the years. One thing about building your own car is you know every nut and bolt on the car and how everything works. When one of my cars breaks down I know I have the ability to trouble shoot and do roadside repairs, provided I have the tools and parts. Over the years I have done many such repairs and also have met some now long time friends that have stopped and given me a ride to a parts store or helped in other ways. I guess things are different now with cell phones and all and people are different too. I'm sure you're a busy guy but maybe have the guys at Loman teach you a little bit about basic trouble shooting and roadside repairs? There may come a time when you don't have cell service or anyone available to help. In this case, if you had been able to start looking things over you may have been able to get the car running again on your own. Remember, an engine just needs compression, spark and fuel to run. If your engine quits just start checking for those. I'm this particular case, I wonder if you had left it in 4th gear while on the highway instead of 5th, if it would have helped. Keeping the RPMs up to build up a little more heat in the motor. I just love the louvers on the trunk lid and roof insert. I keep thinking about doing the same on my car but if I do the roof I'll add some sort of waterproof barrier underneath so I don't have to cover the car in the rain. Maybe on your car you could put in some snaps and use a waterproof snap on cover over the top? Made of vinyl or similar to look like an original roof insert?

We do some little items here and there and even helped take out the old transmission out of this car - see past build videos on the car - with Lo Man Rods. However, with my back/body limitations now I try not to do as much so I am not in pain or paying a price for days to come. Also, with working my normal job, doing Opposing Cylinders full time and having a family with boys playing sports there is just not any time left to try to do more. We have never claimed to be mechanics nor do we have any desire to be one. We know what we are good at and what we are not. There are some things that I know how to do that others do not ever think I would know or have done in the past. We will not go into those things here. I simply cannot and have no desire to do them again. I now leave it to the professionals and enjoy working with many talented shops around the country. It is fun building new relationships and it is great for new content.

@@OpposingCylinders Okay, that all makes sense. I know not everyone has the time or desire. I just figured some basic things to check could help you out on the road and might make for good content too. Your channel is still enjoyable to watch and I will continue to do so. If I ever see you on the side of the road I'll certainly stop to help you out!
