A Young boy is attacked by a Morey Eel and we are the closest thing to first aid in this remote community www.sailingnandji.com
In this Episode of Sailing Nandji, imagine living in a lagoon in the middle of the ocean. No wifi, no cars, no shops, no hospital and the one land line phone to the outside world is 15nm away on a neighbouring island. Welcome to the Ninigo islands of PApua New Guinea. This is where we anchored Nandji for a week and spent our time with the local community. A young boy had been bitten by a Morey Eel and with no doctor or nurses and very limited medical supplies on the island, we are the closest thing to first aid. We try our best at cleaning the boys wound and trying to put the brave young lads hand back together.
We visit the local garden where the family grow all their food and head out spearfishing with one of the lads from the island. We are inundated with gifts of fruit and vegetables and have lunches cooked and brought out to the boat. We have supplies and balls for the kids at the school and take a visit to the community school. Escaping at the end of the week for one quite evening on a remote beach, Marley has some fun and then it is off to sea we go!
We are a young couple with a dog, who with no sailing experience, bought a yacht, got it blue water cruising ready and set off sailing around the Pacific! We just arrived to Indonesia after cruising the Pacific islands. We departed Australia 12 months ago and have since explored some amazing countries, met some amazing people and experienced cultures, dived pristine reefs, surfed solo in the middle of no where, spent weeks at sea, dealt with storms, big waves, strong winds and had the time of our life doing it! The adventure is just beginning as we sail West with the trades!

It wasn't so long ago that I remember a couple of young hopefuls living on Brisbane River, full of dreams but not much experience... Now I see a couple of seasoned sailors who are treating the people they meet with humility and respect, while making a real contribution to the isolated communities they visit. You guys are doing us Aussies proud! Thank you.

Sometimes, just sometimes, our faith in humanity is restored. It's not about the things you accumulate in a lifetime, it's about the gifts you give or leave behind, the things you share without being ask to. You guys do it with such humility, asking nothing and giving what little you have. If only some of our leaders could show the courage to act in the same way.............Sail safe. Ant & Cid xx

I think you are setting a great example for us all. It is what you give that makes a difference, not what you get. I know the other yachties help the isolated islanders but you two really set the bar high. So enjoyable to watch another video of real life on a cruiser. May you both be safe and healthy, staying well away from shoal water with gentle breezes on the beam to help you on your way.

Also, isn't it often the people with the least are the most generous .. and I compare you guys with some of these other sailing channels with obviously a lot more money and more expensive boats and I compare the generosity.. you guys are pretty special..

Excellent work guys! When I was a kid I used to watch a series called The Flying Doctor. Never did I expect to be watching The Sailing Doctor when I grew up! You two should feel really proud of yourselves for helping the best you could. Who knows you may well have done something there from saving the boys finger / hand to possibly even saving his life! Now how cool would it be if a couple of people who've worked for St Johns Ambulance took up sailing and went to these islands teaching something a bit beyond first aid? Enough so that if nothing else, they train a local up enough so that supplies can be left to at least be able to give the next poor bugger a local anaesthetic and have the wounds stitched without being in absolute agony whilst having the stitches done. Sterilising of needles etc dont have to be done in an autoclave. You "can" boil them fairly intensely in water for a few minutes to do the job well enough and I dont see the availability of a simple fire being a problem, unlike mains electricity. May not be ideal, but it's better than what these fellas appeared to currently have and any improvement is still an improvement at the end of the day.
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji
@FrothLyfeSailingNandji 6 жыл бұрын
Haha I used to watch the flying doctors as a little kid as well haha they were probably repeats but i used to love it from memory! You are spot on correct if some one with more first aid skills visited the island and invested some time in teaching people a little. Supplies is the biggest issue! The island only had a bandage and some anti bacterial powder that was at the school, nothing else! We left nearly our entire first aid kit with them and kept just enough for us on passage incase we hurt ourselves! A lady in the village even asked us to check her daughter for malaria... Supplies and knowledge would go a long way to improving life in Ninigo that is for sure!

Yosh , I'm back to thinking that it would be great t if only we could send you an airdrop to replenish all that you have given away , and then that much again and more for going forward . Hi Nandji crew, how y'all doing, another great episode to watch. I always look forward to watching a new episode. It was fantastic that you could help that young boy with his hand. Even a small amount of modern medicine can make a huge difference. Good on you for that. It was also cool that you were able to give the school supplies and balls to the village kids.
