For best adhesion of body filler or hammering the dent back out, the panel should be stripped back to bare metal.

@@somedrunkthylacine7539 yes but I’m wondering why he didn’t pull out the dent first, and what grit is on that sander since it was just being used to shape wood, or just some paint remover and scuff pads

"Well, I'm already in this deep. I might as well tell you, I may be scared of the bigger saws..." Reminds me of a conversation I had with a wood shop teacher when I was a teenager: "Are you scared of using the table saw at all?" "I mean, a little bit, yeah." "Good. That should help prevent you from doing something stupid and getting yourself hurt."

So grinding the metal is one of th3 necessary steps of surface prepping (yes it gives more adherence to the paint se it that was it harder to slip from a non smooth surface) Not an expert but I believe a good surface prepping has some 0.6 or 0.9 mm depth.
