Thanks for making that one. I think the matter of how to properly grip and adjust hand position while holding swords is something that strangely gets discussed way too little. Many people seem shy to ask questions about it as it's just so basic, but a lot of us in the community own swords and practice with them without having access to schools that teach fencing, which leads to a lot of people holding their weapons in less than optimal way for years while practicing. I actually hurt myself a few times by attempting thrusts and some specific cuts because I was told by a fellow sword enthusiast - who, despite being truly well intentioned, really didn't have that much more HEMA expertise than I did - that it was better to keep a tight grip at all time, which obviously puts a dangerous stress on your wrist when thrusting.

Fair warning: don't handle sharp weapons when you've been drinking. I just cut my knuckle when a blade slid off my finger, trying to measure its point of balance. Had a few strong porters first... It wasn't deep but, damn, do I feel like a dummy.

Yeh, sharp swords and alcohol don't mix well! Hope you are okay.

Sword or Sabre?
@AcademyofHistoricalFencing4 жыл бұрын
A sabre is a sword, this is how to grip a range of military swords.

I'm just messing with you guys. I just prefer "swords" that allow for a thumb on the flat, which doesn't necessarily translate to sabre grips...but what is a sword really anyways?
