Lyric: Where were you my lady? I've been in the basement She tied up my ankles As a mere defacement It's so charming, charming He'll find a replacement for me He wondered what I liked I see the flowers in his hands Bluebells and dahlias Tied with a white ribbon They are my favorite I heave a sighing breath Hah, hah, hah, hah love is miles away Will I still wait here for you? It will get cold in the dark With those listless days at bay And the pain, I'll always hide But the hurt, well dare I say it? So loathesome Who said I was a fool? To think in ways so grand? You see, I'm no Snow White The fairest of our land I heave that sighing breath, my cavity expands Hah, hah, hah, hah love is miles away Will I still wait here? Hah hah, hah, hah my heart is yours to take But I'll still wait here for you It will get cold in the dark With those listless days at bay And the pain, I'll always hide But the hurt, well dare I find? Something about hemlocke springs' aesthetic just reminds me of me and my geeky friends running around with our camecorders and taking weird Polaroids in the 00s. It embraces being weird and having "low production values" but compensated with awesome creative vision. Her bops are always catchy too. Huge fan and excited to see where her career goes.

Yea! Hemlocke Springs gives me early 2000s indie sleaze vibes. Before music videos were only about showing off riches, and actually had character to them! There were so many “low production” music vids in the early 2000s that are iconic because they showed off the artists’ creative talent instead of flaunting money.

It might be referencing the use of tempera, which was a painting medium of pigments mixed with a binder, such as egg yolk. @@etoileshine1011 through work I happen to know a lot of black artists who make a similar style of music to Hemlocke, some quite notable and they hate the constant comparisons and laser-focus of their race within a certain genre in comparison to their artistry. There's also a reason why you constantly read or hear about black artists in the metal genre (and beyond) who are very vocal about their distate of these comparisons. I'm not sure why you'd assume Hemlocke is any different? That's ignoring the fact that it's just a generally distasteful thing to do.

Bluebells and dahlias are poisonous, particularly bluebells to humans in large quantities. The antagonist poisoned the family using the same ingredient. The protagonist recalls the scent from a past memory, and knows what's about to happen. Im not clear if the red-headed protagonist that Hemlocke portrays is intended to be the same man mentioned earlier in the song, or if it's a sapphic line just recalling a nostalgic memory, and the idea of him finding a replacement is just a way to lean into the portrayal of the protagonist and the heroine in the dungeon as love interests, but an old memory reminds them of the poisonous scent. Hemlocke playing both characters could also just be a form of duality someone experiences when they're betrayed. The revenger and the revenged, the hero and the victim. The betrayal occurs from the same person, the current wife. Anyway, love the song!! Love the throwback of the music video as well, very A-ha!!!
