Rewatching this video and noticed the shot of the painter using egg yolk and berries at 1:59. It might be referencing the use of tempera, which was a painting medium of pigments mixed with a binder, such as egg yolk. Bluebells and dahlias are poisonous, particularly bluebells to humans in large quantities. The antagonist poisoned the family using the same ingredient. The protagonist recalls the scent from a past memory, and knows what's about to happen. Im not clear if the red-headed protagonist that Hemlocke portrays is intended to be the same man mentioned earlier in the song, or if it's a sapphic line just recalling a nostalgic memory, and the idea of him finding a replacement is just a way to lean into the portrayal of the protagonist and the heroine in the dungeon as love interests, but an old memory reminds them of the poisonous scent. Hemlocke playing both characters could also just be a form of duality someone experiences when they're betrayed. The revenger and the revenged, the hero and the victim. The betrayal occurs from the same person, the current wife. Anyway, love the song!! Love the throwback of the music video as well, very A-ha!!!
