Thanks for your great videos. Learning slide rule techniques helps understand math better, and even a greater appreciation of the scientific calculator. I hope you have more coming.

Thanks! I've been a bit busy with other things recently, but I plan to make more videos in the future.

I think the arrangement you proposed is in one of my preferred slide rules:- the ARISTO 0970.

Regarding 4:13, the Sans & Streiffe No. 312 Slide Rule was the same as the Jason 803, the Lafayette F-428, the Lafayette 99-7055, the Relay 151, the Ricoh OD-151-D, and the Scientific Instruments 151 Slide Rules. The Japanese manufacturer of bamboo slide rules rebranded them under different names for various vendors. For example, the Lafayette 99-7055 Slide Rule was made in 1971 and sold for $15.95 by the Lafayette Radio Electronics Corporation headquartered in Syosset, New York which featured an extensive mail order catalog and retail stores in various cities in the U.S. Regarding the Hemmi 260 Slide Rule, I mail ordered mine from Oscar de Leon located in the Philippines, because he still had some brand new remaining in stock for bargain prices from when they were imported from Japan and sold through his company Odelco.

I did eventually get a couple nice 260s, including an Odelco one. When did you obtain yours? -- if it was recently I'd see if there was still stock.. One interesting thing about the Ricoh rules is the slight variations in cursor styles. Ricoh seems to have made several over the years unlike Hemmi. I wonder if importers ordered a particular one or they just got what they got. One obvious case is SIC which clearly ordered special cursors with scale reminders on them.

@@ProfessorHerning Another point between the Hemmi and Ricoh rules is that the Ricoh is a bit longer physically and I find the Ricoh cursor to be easier to read in various lighting conditions. The Hemmi cursor hairlines can sometimes fade and even disappear in parts. I haven't yet seen a Ricoh cursor that does that. The Hemmi's feel heavier or perhaps "denser" probably because the cursors weigh significantly more than (glass+metal) than Ricoh's all-plastic cursors. The biggest issue with Ricoh cursors (and it can be a significant one) is that they scratch quite easily compared to the glass in a Hemmi. If you want a Ricoh be sure to closely inspect the photos of the cursor for scratches. If you want a Hemmi, be sure to closely inspect the cursor for a solid, bold hairline.

I suspect the "Staedtler Mars 944 24" slide rule as well. Mine is identical in layout, construction etc as noted above, and was also made in Japan.

Many thanks for these videos. The layout you describe at the end sounds alot like my Pickett N803-T. (ah just watched your other Pickett videos and see you're well aware of this model. I can't decide if I like mine or not - sometimes I need to reach for a magnifying glass which is probably not a good thing.)

The Sans Streiffe 312 looks like an exact clone of the Staedtler Mars 944 24 that I picked up in the early 1970's for use through university - even to the brace and cursor construction, slide extensions and numbering, and scale naming. It served me well.

Finally I was able to get my hands on a Hemmi 260. I like the scale layout but I think I am a bit more accurate with my calculations using a Faber Castell 57/82. Perhaps the scale marks are finer on the 57/82? I also find the edges on Hemmi slide rules too sharp, making them less enjoyable to use. Is it OK to sand them a bit?

My Hemmi 260 has two marks on the glass that appear to be used for the A/B scales only (in addition to the main hairline in the middle). What are they for? I looked in the manual and I didn't see mention of them but maybe I missed it? If you look at the image at the sliderulemuseum you can see the marks but you have to look hard at where the A/B scales are. One mark is far to the left of hairline and one is slightly to the right of hairline

I have several Hemmi 260's, also marked "University" in red engraved lettering on the bottom of the lower stator. One came with a 40 page manual in Swedish. I have a theory about this model : In 1932, or thereabout, a Swedish company started to import Hemmi rules directly from Japan, mostly simple pocket rules used as promotional items by large Swedish companies, with their logos embossed on the metal plate on the backside, fex SKF and Asea, but also some Rietz and Darmstadt rules. I believe the 260 "University" may have been commissioned by the Swedish importer, partly because it is very "European" in the scaleset, partly because it has "self-documenting scales" and lastly because there are "many" of them in Sweden, they frequently turn up on Swedish auction-sites and flea-markets. A bit like the Versalog 1460 that is actually a Hemmi 258?

Does anyone know the difference between the 260 and the 260 'University' models. The Uni model has the make and model with the word University on the edge, while the 'Regular' model has the make and model at the end of the slide.

As far as I know there are no differences besides the labeling.

So, ...I finally got a Hemmi-260 and the first thing that I that caught me by surprise was that the C scale has no numbers engraved on the tick marks between 1and 1.5. The way I discovered that was that I kept getting a wrong answer on a chain mult problem but my trusty Deci-Lon gave the right answer to the same problem.. That's when I realized that I had been mis-reading the Hemmi-260 scale due to it having no numbers Lol! I like the self documenting legends on the Hemmi but That Deci-Lon is my favorite still.

I have a modest collection of slide rules that includes the Ricoh 151. I did not know it was a "poor man's Hemmi 260," so thanks for that information! I find it to be a very nice rule and it's becoming a favorite, although it doesn't have the luxurious feel of the K&E 4081 or the Post 1460. I'm also warming up to my Dietzgen 1744. It isn't pretty (it is engraved on the celluloid with a department ID, and the case latch is broken), but it gets the job done. Thanks for your series of videos on slide rules. It has been very informative.
