Yes. The unwaxed allows for good compression due to moisture expansion while the waxed provides smooth turning of the drones. I've done this ever since I learned about it, even un-hemping a 3 week old full hemp job just to try it. I've used this method ever since.

I've been piping for 8 years and just today I learned about the 'half hitch' trick to keep the end of the hemp in place. I'm such a dummy. I'm kicking myself. So simple yet it will end so much frustration.

Thanks for the Info. I have just got my hands on a very old set, at least from the 1960's. Do I need to treat the wood with anything, oil maybe, if so which oil? What about bacteria and fungus that might be on the inside of the wood? Also where can I get more information about what make of bagpipe I have?

Hey Alastair, did you just twist a bunch of the waxed and unwaxed hemp together before you started hemping?

Hi, I'm curious: why do you use a combination of waxed AND unwaxed yellow hemp? Isn't waxed yellow hemp enough?

hello fellow Piper's here's what I do I tie the black waxed hemp with a knot first to prevent it from escaping my hands then with left hand I twists slowly and flow the Grove's if you really care take Your time if you take Your and you did a nice job it'll last indefinitely

No. On my Chanter and BP I use all black waxed. Occasionally I run my thumbnail around them to plump them up and get a tighter fit.
