Yo man..I just saw my first video by you. Check me out. Iam a nearly 63 year old "white boy" who LOVES the game of basketball. You captured this guy perfectly man..I feel like your take on him was perfect. You are a bridge-builder my friend. I am the same...so badly wanting to see relations between black and white people to not just improve ,but be friendly...to see brotherhood. The language of basketball is one way to do it. You have done it perfectly. You know brother, it has been my experience that every time I have shown an ounce of respect to a black person, I have received back a pound in return! A pound! I'm to help you any time you want my friend. Just holler. I am now a fan of yours...dawg! 🕊️&❤...Dr. Brett H.

Not only one of the best rivalries, it ended the best way possible, when they shot a commercial together at Bird's house, Bird invited Magic over since his mom cooked lunch for them, and his mom asked him if he told Magic yet, and he says "no you tell him" and she says "you're my favorite basketball player magic" and after that moment they became best friends because of just how hilarious it all turned out, and realizing they weren't that different.

When discussing the double team defense Larry had to face in the NCAA final, remember that college rules allowed double teams on a player without the ball (and of course zone defenses), whereas in the NBA, you couldn’t double team a player until they had possession. That is a huge difference. Michigan State basically played “keep-away” defense against Larry, and when he did get the ball, every shot was contested by at least two defenders.

Nice video. You may not know this, but as a young kid…a young white kid…the guys who made Bird better ( he has told this many times) were the brothers who worked at the nearby hotel who let him play with them. This and other parts of Larry’s history also show how he looked at people…not the least bit by race…Ever….but just by talent and integrity. What a unique player. That he honestly transcends race is just another great aspect of his persona. I don’t think he even understood how racism could possibly exist. Larry saw people as…people. Period.

Now for the All-Stat game - Bird played a total of 23 minutes. He had 7 assists(tied for the East team most and only Abdul-Jabbar had more with 9) He also had 6 rebounds. However, he only had 7 points(2-4 from 2pt range and 1-2 from 3pt range) But 5 of those 7 came late in the overtime period during crunch time. Also during that time in the NBA, the players really played in the All-Star game. It was the best showing what they could do against their opponents both on offense and defense - unlike today where it is just a show and not an actual competition.

What a GREAT video! I'm 56 years old. I was there during all of this. I will not lie and say race wasn't a part of the story. Heck, at some level race is a factor in almost all walks of American life. Let's not argue about it, but rather recognize it for what it was/is. But the Larry-Magic rivarly transcended that, and it gave a teenager like me hope that we could just see athletes and people for their character and accomplishments. I was a rabid Celtics fan, and I rooted for them with all my heart. But I also LOVED Magic and his "Showtime" teammates. The Celtics were loaded with great athletes and good people, but the Lakers were, too. It was a special time that perhaps we'll never see again. Thanks for this excellent commentary on a very important period in American sports.

I attended Rose-Hulman during the 33-1 season. I gave ISU NO RESPECT for the first fifteen games - then started to watch. ISU had a "constant" - which was to lock down on D late in the game - that, along with the wizard from French Lick (and a tying bank shot at the buzzer from sideline/centerline) maintained the streak.

He goes 33 and 1 in his senior year in college toa national championship game. Then it's followed up with an improvement from 29 -53 to 61-20 which is 32 more wins. That 96-22 in two years. 158-42 in 3 years. One last thing the reason why Larry played with so many Hall of Fame top 75 players is because he passed them the ball in positions to which they could be most effective.

No comment of Bird's sent Maravich into retirement. His injuries did..and unbeknownst to Maravich, his cardiac condition. Also, the way Bird played against Kentucky's Jack Givens was kind of a message to Joe B. Hall, the coach. Bird had been interested in playing for Kentucky, but Hall thought he was too slow. I've seen a lot people say he's overrated because he had a bunch of Hall of Famers as teammates. Look at those Hall of Famers stats when they weren't on a team with him. They only put up Hall of Famer stats with Larry. Larry's stats were consistent every year with it without Hall of Fame teammates. When other teams put guards on him most of his shots would be relatively uncontested because of his height. When they put big guys on him he was usually doubled up which cleared the paint for his taller teammates. They also had more opportunities because of all those ridiculous passes he made. DJ wasn't a great shooter but when he played with Bird he didn't have to shoot as much and could be a true PG which shows by the huge jump in assists per game. Everyone was better just because he was on the court with them

All true, but those are still insane numbers Pistol put up when you know the other teams were keying on him entirely throughout the games. He was the only offensive threat LSU had so he had to have mad skills just to get open long enough to take all those shots. I'm sure the same was true for Bird in college too, though. That Bird-Magic rivalry dates back to the college NCAA finals and it never ended until they left the NBA. Great games. When I saw him play at Indiana State, I had never seen a big white guy with his skills. He lived up to the hype in my opinion. The other biggest rivalry is Chamberlain and Russell. As quoted in Pistol Pete's biography, Pete Maravich retired due to coach Bill Fitch giving him a hard time in practice. It wasn't because of Bird's disrespect, and you can see Bird saying complimentary things about him in interviews. At that point, Pistol was broken down due to injuries. Since the Celtics won the title next year, it's one of the many tragic near-misses in Maravich's career, including playing with Dr. J, the NIT championship, in which he got much closer to winning than people realize. Also, Maravich led the NBA in scoring and once scored 68 points against the top defense in the league, the New York Knicks. Isaiah Thomas and Magic Johnson admit getting their moves from Pistol Pete. In many ways he was a greater player than even Larry Bird.

I watched a few of these videos on bird and always knew he was good, but man I didn't know he was this good. I saw where they were asking all these NBA stars if there's one shot they had to take you can pick anybody to take it in your life depended on that shot and almost all of them said bird. That shows you the level of respect for his clutch.

I would imagine you are right about Magic feeling like the underdog. In reality, he had the better team. Without Bird, Indiana was a mediocre team. But Bird was on the Sport Illustrated cover because he led a team to the championship and they were undefeated. That had to play in Magic's head. However, this gave Magic the advantage because while on any given day, you can say both were completely capable of beating one another, Magic feeling like an underdog would only make him more determined rather than the opposite. Meanwhile, Bird could have made the mistake of letting his guard down and get too comfortable with the wins. That loss was probably the most important thing that would set the stage for the next decade because no matter how the next decade would play out in their minds, neither one ever underestimated the other throughout their NBA career and the game wasn't over until the clock hit 0 on the final quarter. I wonder if Bird's first season with the Celtics would have been as impressive if he hadn't taken that loss and learned that nobody in undefeatable. He went in with something to prove.

Larry Bird was the most fearless and highest IQ player the world of basketball has ever witnessed. We never seen a player in all of sports talk crap to the best going into the NBA, but evolving to walk the talk with actions and glorious wins. All his black competitors look up to him still to this day. The Magic vs. Bird show turned around the NBA. The NBA today has turned "soft" and Bird would be dominating the league right now if his was in his prime in 2023.I do not want to say that there is the GOAT in basketball like MJ, for example, but Larry Bird is definitely in the the "select few" private NBA GOAT CLUB!

Both the lakers and the Celtics only cared about what they each did as teams. Players from both teams have said every day they would look to what the other team did that night. For all the young bucks, he was one of the smartest players in history. Y'all say slow, but it was after the back injury, that followed him the rest of his career. Even with that slowing him down, he was still a first ballot HoFer. Bird was amazing.

Looking at the boxscore of the 1979 NCAA finals shows have much ISU depended on Bird. Bird had a horrible shooting game he scored 19 points on 7-21 field goals and was only 5-8 from the foul line. Bird was the only player for either team that had double digit rebounds with 13, with the next closest person having 8. ISU had 6 steals that game, 5 of them by Bird. ISU had 2 blocks, 1 of them by Bird. Magic had a better shooting game. He scored 24 points on 8-15 field goals and 8-10 from the foul line. Magic also had 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 steal. As a team, MSU shot 60.5% from the floor and 69.7% from the FT line As a team, ISU shot 42.2% from the floor and 45.5% from the FT line making only 10 of 22 foul shots. As for Bird's first season in the NBA, he came in and basically took over. No rookie BS, here is the way to play the game if you want to win and they all bought into what Bird said, which allowed them to go from 29-53 to 61-21. Here are some interesting stats from Birds first season with the Celtics Thy only lost 6 games at home that season. The first game was the 25th game of the season and they got blown out by 28 points against Atlanta at home. Their record after the first half of the season was 31-10 with a home record of 17-1 In the 2nd half of the season they lost 5 games at home - 4 of 5 were losses of 5 points or less. Their 2nd half record was 30-11 and home record was 18-5. This is how immediate Birds impact was. The Celtics won 60 or more games 6 times in Birds first 7 seasons. In MVP voting in Birds first 7 seasons he was 4,2,2,2,1,1,1.

Yes, the Magic vs. Bird and Lakers vs. Celtics rivalry dominated the 1980's and can be considered as possibly sports greatest rivalry. Fun fact: between 1980 and 1990, the Lakers or Celtics won 8 of the 10 titles in that decade, Lakers: 5, Celtics: 3. As a lifetime Lakers fan, Magic will always be my favorite player, but even us Lakers fans have to give all due respect to Bird and his hall of fame career. Watching them go head to head back then was awesome! 👍🏼

What few people remember is that Magic had some help on his team, whereas, Bird was carrying the entire Indiana State team. Michigan State also had two other NBA players in Greg Kelser, who was 'Pippin', and Jay Vincent, who was Horace Grant, to Magic's Jordan. Both Kelser and Vincent played in the NBA and were good players. Not stars, but not bench warmers either. In comparison, NO ONE else on Indiana State had even a prayer of being in the NBA.

Magic vs. Bird is not just the greatest individual rivalry in sports history, it's the most important example of race relations in American history. Larry and Magic were a duo. They needed each other. Without the chip on Magic's shoulder, who knows if he wins the NCAA championship? Without losing that game who knows if Larry wins his first NBA championship against Magic? I don't think either man reaches their max potential without the other, in the back of their head, pushing them to greatness. I was born in '75 and was lucky enough to live this rivalry. Both men exemplified their respect for the game and respect for their opponents through their competitive spirit and dedication to their craft. It was pure and intense, not because of their skin color, but because of their greatness. As a Celtics fan as a kid, I remember the "We Want LA!!" chants from the Boston Garden fans. As a fan you almost felt cheated if you didn't get the "Lake Show" in the finals. Thanks for this vid. Larry talkin that is trash to Pistol Pete had me Rollin!!! 😂🤣😂

Absolutely this Rivalry is the best of all time. Lets not forget that in 1981 NBA Finals Celtics vs Lakers Bird vs Magic helped get the NBA off of tape delay on TV. In the Finals Games 1,2, 5 and game 6 were all on tape delay. That's how bad the NBA was at the time before this Bird vs Magic Rivalry started. Their games weren't on television live. All games were tape delayed. Then Bird and Magic come into the league and in 2 years they actually got 2 games picked to be live in the 1981 Finals. Games 3 and 4. After Bird gets his revenge in 1981 and Beats Magic and the Lakers. After that the NBA slowly and quickly gets all games back to being live. So there are so many that say Bird and Magic saved the NBA. So no doubt this is the best Rivalry ever.

If anyone is dumb enough to think great ball players of the past couldn't still be great are just ignorant.

New Sub here.. I grew up watching Bird and Magic.. thise two made the NBA better. They brought basketball back to television and they made it great. Anyone who says Jordan saved th NBA is just not hip to the truth..... Celtics for life but love all the NBA legends from the 1980's thought the mid 90's. The game changed after them , it got soft so I look for videos like this to reminisce about the good old days of basketball...thank you for sharing my GOAT.... And yes the rivalry between Bird and Magic kept us tuning in. Back them their games would be played back to back on TV and we Celtics fans respected Magic because we saw that him and Bird were the two best players of that era and they brought out thr best in one another on that court..
