To your question at 16:45, the other MVPs of the 1970s were: Willis Reed ('70), Dave Cowens ('73), Bob McAdoo ('75), Bill Walton ('77), and Moses Malone ('79). But Kareem won all 5 other years of the '70s, and also in 1980.

About Kareem and Tupac: I'd reckon Kareem wasn't much of a fan of gangsta-rappers, based on what I know about his personality.

Kareem is #4 on my all time list. Arguably the greatest collegiate player of all time (rivaling Pete Maravich and his fellow UCLA guy, Bill Walton) He is a player we will never see again. Oh.... and if he played in today's era??? He would dominate the center position. Even with the influx of bigs shooting three's. All time greats adapt to the game and its rules. Great reaction as always bro...

An important thing to know is that in the 1980 Finals = AFTER Magic's great game 6 the voters had chosen Kareem to win the FMVP. Because he was not present ( Kareem was back in LA) CBS did not want to present the award to an empty chair and asked the voters to change their votes so Magic would win the award. The details of this is covered in the book titled "Kareem" on pages 140-141. That FMVP award should really be in Kareem's trophy case and then he would have 3 FMVP's and deservedly so! ( I have Kareem as my number 2 behind Jordan ) Thanks for another great video!

Which Kareem was better, Bucks or Lakers? About equal, to be honest. With the Bucks (6 seasons), his per-game averages were 30.4p/15.3r/4.3a/3.4b/1.2s. His first 6 seasons with the Lakers (I stopped there to keep it fair, so the entire tail end of his career didn't drag down his Lakers numbers), his averages were 25.8p/12.8r/4.4a/3.4b/1.2s. So at a glance, the stats make it *_look_* like he was a bit better with the Bucks. However, with the Bucks, his best teammates were usually guards, while with the Lakers (first six seasons), his best teammates were usually forwards (until Magic arrived in Kareem's 5th Laker season). So I think those differences probably account for why he scored and rebounded a bit more with the Bucks: because he had to carry more of the front court load himself. Maybe he was slightly better with the Bucks, but not too much. ( *EDIT* - His Bucks stats for blocks and steals are only based on his last two years with the Bucks, because the NBA didn't start keeping track of those until the 1973-74 season. Also, he played almost five more minutes per game on average with Bucks, which of course kept his numbers higher).

Maaannn, one of my first shots I learned as a young bigman (I was 6'1", 190pounds at 13 years old; now 6'4", 240) was the hookshot. It was no skyhook, I wasn't coordinated enough :P. Just the basic go sideways and release it high hookshot, but man was it easy to hit :D Once I figured that out, I went through the regional U14tournaments averaging 20 and 20 :P I tried learning the fader early-on too, but my coaches didn't like it and gave me 10 push-ups for every one I attempted, 5 if I made them :P Once I played mainly pick-up, though, that fader became my mainstay XD It got so good that a friend of mine started cussing me out when we played against, because I wouldn't miss it :D

One thing about Kareem's longevity vs Lebron's: it never came at the expense of his defense. you'd never see Kareem not running back on D leaving his team to play 4-v-5 or not giving effort on defense. Lebron is doing great things on offense for his age, but those come at the cost of him playing (or rather not playing) defense.
@BartholomewSmutz

I'm a Kareem guy and think he's the greatest but to be fair Kareem would sometimes take a break after defensive rebound and outlet pass on a fast break knowing the play would already be over by the time he hustled down the court. Which was a smart move in my opinion. With the minutes Kareem played and at his age a few breathers were justified.
@johnnyblingg
@johnnyblingg 2 жыл бұрын
@@BartholomewSmutz Then why are you bringing it up? What’s there to be fair about? OP was talking about how KAJ’s defense didn’t decline dramatically and you’re talking about him smartly taking a breather after throwing out an outlet pass to create an easy fast break bucket. Like ok…he was smart at managing his stamina.

Kareem had the hook shot later to be called the Sky Hook but after the Dunk ban he utilized it more and perfected it. Kareem could also hit the mid-range jumper and turn around jumper but later in his career would rarely take those shots due to the extreme effectiveness of the Sky-Hook. If you want to see how atletic Kareem could be look at some Milwaukee Bucks highlights.

Hi, young man. I’m 63 and recall a young Lew Alcindor at UCLA. I vividly recall his entire NBA career. To me, Wilt Chamberlain was the greatest athlete that we have ever seen. Kareem is the greatest BASKETBALL PLAYER that we have ever seen. Kareem, at his brilliant peak during the 1970s, was incredible to watch. The Sky Hook, his signature shot, was and remains the single greatest and most reliable weapon in basketball history. This coming year, Lebron will break Kareem’s all time NBA scoring record. Kareem has held the record since 1984. To answer some of your questions: 1. Kareem didn’t win the MVP Award more than he did because of “voter fatigue”. How many times can you give a guy the award? So, they periodically gave the award to someone else. 2. Wilt left the Lakers because he retired. 3. Kareem started developing the sky hook at a young age because he said it was the only shot he could take against older players and not have it blocked. He perfected the shot at UCLA after the NCAA banned the dunk in a failed attempt to stop Alcindor’s dominance. Any other questions about Kareem, just ask. Stay safe.

One thing about the freshmen vs varsity game: that UCLA team had won 2 straight national championships and were favourites to win it again that season. Also 1 of the losses came against Houston and Elvin Hayes (39 and 15) while Lew had a scratched cornea. They lost it 71-69. In that year's semifinals they met again and UCLA won 101-69, keeping Hayes to 10 points (he averaged almost 38).

Yah, so here’s the thing: even guys like ME just succumb to the MJ GOAT argument and I guess we feel comfortable doing that. But consider… Kareem was NEVER going to be a “movie star” and, yes, his style of winning just came off as, “boring.” But when you put it all together, it’s really HARD not to talk about him as the GOAT. The man was special. He wasn’t flashy. He wasn’t what we consider a, “superstar” but dayum! The athlete couldn’t be denied. He was just, “there” and freakin RELEVANT for years and years. I don’t know, man. I’ll stick with MJ because: reasons. But there’s a piece of me that repels at that notion because: farkin Kareem. He was undeniable. He was a champion. I don't know how many clutch shots they made, but here are the 5 bigs I'd want to take a clutch shot: Kareem (skyhook and defense), Dirk (fader and FTs), Jokic (be it passing or making it), Wilt (great jumpshot and inside scoring), Hakeem (feed him in the post and let him go to work). Honourable mention to Tim Duncan, I just think that Dirk out-clutches him. I'm assuming we aren't counting forwards, right? ( I know I included Dirk and Tim, but I'd say they're big enough :P).

Give me Duncan over wilt on the clutch by a country mile. Wilt was amazing but he was FAAR from someone u take in the clutch. If u take any bit in the clutch from that era it’s Russell. Everyone knew the ball was going in his hands, and he delivered every time he got the chance.

Longevity: *_Every_* player's abilities lessen as they age. Everyone. Without exception. So if a player is still good enough to be 1st-team all-NBA at age 38, as Kareem was in 1986, that means he was way *_better_* than "just" 1st-team all-NBA level when he was in his prime. For comparison, Tim Duncan's last 1st-team all-NBA pick, he was 36. LeBron was 35 (though of course he might still get more). Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan were both 34. The vast, vast majority of NBA players, even players with 10+year careers, don't even *_play_* until 38, much less still be 1st-team all-NBA at that age...
