As a local I can say Destin is like a hidden paradise of a beach town. You guys will love it. It gets crowded beginning in spring break and doesn’t let up until football season but even then it’s awesome. 4th of July is probably the busiest day but if you go to a good spot you will see fireworks all along the coast. Plus there are so many restaurants to try both local and national chains. Bonefish Grill is my first choice. Destin Commons is like the shopping hub and has the AMC at its heart but for the best movie experience you’ll have to go to the Carmike. The silver sands outlet is also a great place to shop. And of course tons of fun stuff: gulfarium, the track, parasailing, skiing, go karts, arcades and more Best time of the year to come though is around October because the water is clear, tourism is low and the heat isn’t has harsh. And finally if you go to the beach at 9am or 4pm you can look out and see dolphins

We lived across the street from Henderson Beach in the mid- eighties. Absolutely beautiful. It has changed so much since we lived there, but it is still gorgeous. I used to iron clothes out on our balcony and I could see the water and beach. We could hear the waves at night while we slept.

Went home got rid of everything..got a van was moving to destin. 3 days before I left a hurricane came...I heard destin was destroyed!! Nothing left but toothpicks n trash....I was heart broken...I've never gone back. :( recently discovered destin on you tube...I want to go. Born n raised in orlando I'm scared of hurricanes!!! Been going down from Northern Indiana (Goshen) for the last 10 or 12 years. We've stayed at their house or traveled down with our 40' 5th wheel when we want to stay for longer periods of time. Excellent video sad to see my old stomping grounds so commercialized. I can remember back in the late 50's and early 60's we use to go on the bay side starting at the Destin Bridge we use to go hunting along the cliffs for Indian pottery. We could sit in the water at certain sites and reach down in the sand and pick up pieces of pottery. The people we went with had an enormous collection of Indian Pottery. They put it in the museum by the Indian Mound in Ft. Walton Beach. Their name was Lazarus. I can tell you before the commercialization of that area it was a paradise of beautiful beaches and water. We use to gig crabs on the bay side between Brooks Bridge and the Destin Bridge. We would fill up a tub in no time. Hoping to make a trip that way before I die.

I live about 20 minutes from ft. DeSoto also in Pinellas Park and I agree that I need to take a trip to Henderson but would need a second person to tow my boat up. Boat rentals are to much money otherwise. I would want to tow my camper up. However though not a fan of ft. DeSoto, we have a week stay coming up in March for out of town relatives followed by blue springs in Gilchrist , then rainbow river and Henderson might as well be on that list being close to Gilchrist. It is my thinking plans of one week at Gilchrist going straight to a week in Henderson before making the trip to Pinellas but I must check how long in advance does reservations need to be for Henderson in advanced to coordinate it perfectly. Does anyone know? I know Gilchrist takes about one month which is actually short.

I grew up here in this area in the 50’s and early 60’s when Destin was a tiny fishing village. We used to hunt the area for Indian artifacts, pottery and such. It was everywhere back then. During this time there was one hotel between Panama City and Pensacola. I think it was called the Jack Tar motel/hotel. Boy have things changed...if you think this area is pristine today you should have seen it in the 50’s. Beautiful big white sand dunes before the dune buggies knocked them down. Fortunately the water is still beautiful and the white sand beaches are still pretty as ever. Florida is my home and I really miss living there....Texas beaches suck.

I've always said there's no reason to drive any further into Florida than Destin. It's the most beautiful beach in Florida as far as I'm concerned. It's been 25 plus years since I've been and as Fred said, it's changed so much even since I was there, let alone when Fred grew up when it was truly pristene. We camped right on the beach once and woke up in a hurricane! We had no idea it was coming! I'll never forget it. There used to be a cinder block motel with no phone and it was right on the beach and affordable. I think it was called Silver Dunes. I wish I could go back and it would still be the same. Again, as Fred said, the beaches are white and the water is clear as ever, so I will get back there again one day. I wish I still had that bikini body! Oh well!

All of the Gulf coast in NW Florida panhandle is like this. We are so fortunate and unfortunate at the same time. Since Panama City made a conscious effort to curtail alot of spring breakers some years back, Destin has become overloaded. The spring breakers and snowbirds have taken over. Crab Island is great for the partiers, but it once was so beautiful to go there and be able to fish and crab, hence the reason it was named crab island. Sorry just my opinion, I have lived here for years. You can't keep a good thing secret forever.

My hometown too...although I live in "paradise" now, I love to visit home when possible. I remember when Crab Island actually had blue crabs galore. Spent many years, as a kid, fishing and crabbing that area.

@@CampTravelExplore definitely makes us not miss San Diego as much being back by beautiful beaches and the added bonus of incredible springs and rivers! Sadly prices for airline tickets have shot back up so our idea of a quick weekend trip back to San Diego to see family and friends is out but Destin is close enough that may be where we end up instead! I know this one is hard to get in are there aother campgrounds close by that aren't as hard to reserve?

@CampTravelExplore4 жыл бұрын
Thank You so much for the kind feedback! Yeah I couldn't find a spot to fly the drone because we were too close to an executive airport! Did you check out our newest one from Grayton beach yet? I got some drone shots there from just outside the state park!

@@CampTravelExplore Yes, your Grayton Beach video is the first one I saw and I immediately subscribed to your channel. Double red doesn't mean "probably a little dangerous" It means its actually against the law to enter the water, due to high rip or other hazards. I cant tell you how many people ignore this and die when they come down to visit. It is vitally important for visitors to know and pay attention to the flags.
@CampTravelExplore4 жыл бұрын
Thank You for the additional insight, we just wanted to get people realizing they have the flag system up and down the panhandle beaches we visited and want people paying attention to them! Appreciate your feedback!

@@CampTravelExplore We moved here 5 years ago, and it’s truly sad when we hear the news reports during peak season, when visitors ignore or don’t know about the warnings, and then die as a result. People’s family’s end their vacations in a horrific and tragic manor, because they don’t respect the water.
