A lot of Las Vegas is a rundown dump that looks like Los Angeles. Yuck. However, (ding) there are some really nice places to live in Las Vegas, too. One of the more popular places to live in the Vegas metro area for regular people like you and me is a place called Henderson.
Henderson isn’t actually IN Las Vegas. It’s a separate city NEAR Las Vegas - about 10 miles to its east. There’s 320,000 people here, making it the second largest city in this state. It’s also growing really fast -Henderson has added another third of its population in the last 10 years alone, making it the 10th fastest growing city in the country for cities of its size.
People are moving here for the warmth and the relatively low cost of living. The average home here is about $500,000. For this video, we’re going to drive around one of the nicer parts of Henderson to show you what it looks like as well as talk to a local realtor who can tell us even more about this city. PLUS, as an added bonus, I am fully aware of a part of Henderson that locals bag on all the time because it’s poor. They call this part of Henderson Hendertucky. I went there and recorded some of Hendertucky, too. Cause you people like to stare at poverty which is just weird.
But let’s begin our drive through Henderson.
Now it might not LOOK very stimulating - all these rows of track homes. Many of you are probably thinking - where’s the space and the big yards and the trees? You have a good point. But you can’t argue with the desirability factor here. People say it has a hometown small town feeling, and a lot of people here are involved with the community in some way. And you don’t have to worry about breakins or trashy people walking around on your block.
Henderson always wins all sorts of awards for being a great place to live. Notable publications have called Henderson one of the best cities to live in the country because it’s really safe and clean. There’s parks all over the place and most of the kids get good grades in their classes. Mommies and daddies have good jobs.
A lot of the people who live here are higher ups at the hospitals and casinos in the area. Doctors, nurses, surgeons, casino executives - those sorts of people. In the really nice parts of Henderson, you’ll find notable celebrities and famous athletes. Mike Tyson lives here.
Okay so we’re going to break away for a minute and show you the bad side of Henderson because that’s what you people like to see. I get emails from people saying - why do you only show bad dangerous areas? Why not show the good parts of cities too? Well, people, that’s because you don’t click on videos that are about happy places. You want to see BAD stuff. Ask yourselves why that is.
So, to appease many of you, I drove to the Pittman neighborhood located on the far northern fringes of Henderson. Locals call this place Hendertucky because as they put it, the area is full of tweakers, trump flags and trashy people. Which is MEAN. Hey I didn’t name it that.
But when I drove there I could see what people meant. It’s not the nice, new part of town. It’s the old part of town. But even though this part of town gets made fun of, there’s a lot of pride to living in the Tucky. I’d bet a lot of people here would rather live in the Tucky than any other part of Henderson or the Vegas metro area in general.
There are t shirts and other merch that Hendertuckians can buy. It really is a local phenomenon.

I live in Las Vegas to attend nursing school. What I see in Henderson and Las Vegas, is what I see is currently happening in Lake Tahoe. A LOT of people are moving from California and they're driving up rents and home prices. We call Las Vegas valley the new California. There's a lot of jobs, but not enough workers because the service working people (cashiers, gas station attendants, casino workers, hotel housekeeping, etc.), can't afford to work here anymore because they can't afford to live here anymore. Las Vegas/Henderson is currently working on rent control laws. A recent news story reported about a man who was paying $1400 for a 4 bedroom house, and the landlord raised the rent to $7000. That's how bad it is out here. A lot of locals hate the influx of Californians because they're raising our rents. Californians keep saying how cheap it is out there. But mot anymore. This is the NEW CALIFORNIA. 😢

Henderson resident since 2003. Once thing that needs to be mentioned: WATER. Southern Nevada is in a severe drought and has been for a decade. What that means for the area and the growth is uncertain. I did see lots of lawns that will need to be removed. A new ordinance passed in Henderson that watering decorative lawns is now illegal. Parks, schools, and single-family homes are exempt, but most believe not for long. Also, while power and water prices are relatively low now, most voices are calling for huge increases to encourage wider solar acceptance and reduced pool building. Next do Boulder City. ;)

Hi there Nick! Thanks for showcasing the cute little city of Henderson… I actually lived in Henderson for several years because of its peaceful association with the great Las Vegas! I spent a total of five years in Las Vegas working for two of the radio stations as an on-air personality and I also did some contract work for a company then known as TRW. That brought me to another great little city called Summerlin. Summerlin is a more high end area yet still close and convenient to Las Vegas proper. My experience out there was back in the mid to late 90s I have not been back since the early 2000‘s when I noticed a huge amount of growth compared to when I lived there. Living in the desert is not as bad as some people may think. Basically you must get used to the dryness and the heat. And coming from New England originally, and having been living in Florida for several years before Vegas, I got used to the heat but the heat is different out west. Your biggest fear living in the desert so close to Las Vegas is definitely not weather or animals… It is clearly temptation to gamble!! That will take you down faster than a speeding train! LOL! Just to let you know Nick, it would behoove you to advise your guests on your show to have good audio because this one was difficult to listen to as she was all echoey and it made me have to stop and pause this several times just to be able to listen for another two or three minutes. I grew up in Henderson(Boulder and Russell), but it's not quite the same as it was in the 2000s. I've moved my family to Mountain's Edge since, and I find it to be a much better area for families. Never seen so many people walking dogs in my life. Even the small number of section 8 residents respect their neighborhood unlike the Green Valley folk. The gasoline out here is about 50 cents cheaper than the rest of Vegas too!

I live in Henderson , and now that the Raiders are out here in Vegas our rent prices as of a few months ago have ski rocketed…about $400-$500 more a month …which is insane for us locals …a lot has to do with the fact many California residents are moving out here and to them it’s extremely affordable…considering the prices they’ve been used to paying …an average 1 bdrm is about $1500-$1600/month out here and u have to show you make 3 times that amount to qualified to rent and there is hardly any “landlords” anymore , being that Property Management companies have bought up a lot of the homes out here…so ….not much leniency there…. besides that the heat is unbearable for bout half of the year …never can get used to that …not even enjoyable to sit by a pool because it’s like sitting in a oven ..🤷🏼‍♀️

I agree. Things will never get better for students in this area unless we separate from Vegas. I worked for the district for over 20 years. I can tell you first hand how bad it is and how we need to form a Henderson School District. When Henderson first formed it was Henderson School District. It should have stayed that way. Lyle Burkholder was the Superintendent. He and his wife were great friends of my parents. We used to go boating on Lake Mead with them. That's before there ever was a bathtub ring around the lake!

Long time resident of Henderson. I am a Realtor here and the boom here has been insane. Some listings will get 20 to 50 offers in a couple of days. First time homebuyers are left by the wayside. Lots of investors and cash buyers coming in and scooping up the homes. So sad.

It gets good press but I spent a lot of time in this area when first living out here..medical appointments..shopping. Overrated. Very large impersonal boulevards that give a sense of alienated suburban planning. Very reminiscent of San Fernando Valley in the 80’s..on the way to being overly crowded and cluttered.. yet people I knew there were nostalgic about having ground up in The Valley. All I saw were impersonal fast fading malls. Maybe Henderson will have a better outcome.

You're absolutely right. We are in the midst of a massive economic crisis that will end in a world war and revolution. The explanation of what is happening and why: Under capitalism, all crises are crises of overproduction (for details, see the third volume of Marx's "Capital" or the chapter "Economic Crises" from the textbook "Political Economy" (1954, K. Ostrovitianov). Solvent demand lags behind the rate of production, the market becomes saturated, many commodities are unsold. This collapses the prices of these goods and, consequently, the profits of the owners of production. To save their profits, under the guise of a "pandemic", global financial capital pursues the following goals: 1. Reducing/compressing production by shutting down production sites, moving enterprises to a part-time working week, "quarantining" workers without pay etc. (this is done to allow old goods to gradually dissipate and suspend the production of new ones). 2. Physical destruction of "surplus" products that cannot be sold (think of the destruction of millions of livestock, millions of tons of milk, vegetables, fruit, Dutch mink, etc., in 2020, under the pretext of the "pandemic"). "Swine flu", "bird flu" and the "African fever of swine" are used for the same purpose - getting rid of "surplus" products in the food industry (also bankrupting the smaller producer). 3. Forcibly inflating commodity prices to compensate for the losses and to stop them falling as a result of overproduction, creating scarcity and hype 4. Hiding the fact that supply chain disruptions are the result of factory shutdowns (see 1) and other anti-crisis measures of capitalists 5. Labor force reductions. In order to hide the very fact that there is a colossal crisis requiring an unprecedented number of layoffs, in order to make money on "vaccines" and save on layoff payments, capitalists force hired workers to get "vaccinates" or to resign voluntarily by giving them the ultimatum of not being allowed to work without being "vaccinated" 6. The elimination of small and medium-sized enterprises (i.e. smaller capitalists), to occupy their niche in the market 7. Reducing state budget expenditures (which under capitalism are at the disposal of the largest monopolies) on the social sector (primarily education and medicine). 8. Fighting against the growing protest wave and revolutionary upsurge caused by the crisis and measures undertaken to combat the crisis; this fight is carried out by demoralizing the population, banning gatherings, putting muzzles on people's faces, making it difficult to communicate, etc. 9. The intensification of economic exploitation (cancellation of benefits, bonuses, non-payment of salaries, prolonged working hours, reduction of benefits) 10. Inventing new sources of profit and forcing products on millions of people that they don't need (e. g., "hygiene masks", "vaccines", PCR "tests", medicines for "covid treatment" and various other "covid" equipment). By means of government contracts at the expense of the budget, billions of dollars in extra profits are pumped into the pockets of the largest capitalists. Note, that the "climate crisis" is another disguise of all of the above-mentioned economic measures.

@@BrogeKilrain why do you refer to yourself as "we"? or you think I am alone against everyone else? Rest assured there are other communists here. And there will be more and more when the capitalist crisis brings more and more suffering, unemployment, starvation andwars; and when more people start realizing that they cannot live like this anymore. There only ever was one socialist country - the USSR. And it was destroyed by counter-revolution. It happens, you know? You should learn some history. The history of bourgeous/capitalist revolutions for example. Capitalists wrestled with feudals for centuries on end in some cases. And there were counter-revolutions too. But capitalists were destined to win because the means of production outgrew feudalism. Just as they have outgrown capitalism now.

Henderson has grown so much! It used to be a nothing town in the middle of nowhere, on the way to Hoover Dam. It overlooks Vegas, though, and I knew in the 80’s this would be prime real estate someday. They have golf courses and beautiful new homes now. Good for Henderson! (Of course) 😉😁

The realtor is citing inaccurate population data for the Las Vegas metro area and for Henderson. First, Henderson is a little over 300k people, maybe 320k, so I’m not sure what she means when she says 700k. Also, all of Las Vegas metro is only about 2.3 million as of 2021. There is one particular website that lists inaccurate population stats for Vegas metro and they show it as 2.8 million which is wrong. The official 2020 census figures for all of Clark County (updated to 2021) put it at about 2.3 million and if you look at a map of Clark County you will see that it encompasses all of Las Vegas metro, including Henderson, and Vegas. The official census numbers as well as most websites that track metro population, correctly list it as 2.3 million.

maybe the realtor is confused, and does NOT understand how the borders of the cities work, nor our population totals............ she brought up St. Rose, its not even in the City of Las Vegas, its in the county Township of Enterprise i think...... The County (CLARK) decided that their section of the valley (Sahara Avenue Southside of street in the West) / (Charleston Blvd Southside of the street in the East past Boulder Highway), will be uniform and use the City of Las Vegas name as well

Hendertucky is Henderlucky if you found a home that didn't have an expensive HOA. Most of Henderson is unaffordable with HOA's added. The Foothills of Henderson is a wonderful area that lacks expensive HOA's for homes built in the 90's. No HOA's will bring some undesirable looks to the area, but more affordable to those looking to move to Henderson.

We all live in what we call old Henderson. I'm not at all familiar with the newer parts of Henderson. I love my town. You can go to the stores and shops and always run into someone you know. Downtown is being revamped lots of new businesses moving in. Some really great restaurants have opened up. It's slowing changing but it will always be old Henderson. I don't like the name Hendertucky It's old Henderson or Hendo to the old-timers like me.

There's just one problem. Suburbia. This is in part why Las Vegas/Henderson was specially struck hard during the great recession. And why it's going to be really hurting in this next coming recession even though the city has evolved from exclusive gaming to healthcare, entertainment, and sports. There's nothing worse for a city and people than car dependency, and isolationism via suburbs.
