I can't wait this to be applied everywhere. I hate seeing all these massive cracks on the roads and then avoiding them to not get knocked down.

What about acid rain? Does the 'healed' concrete that has been filled with limestone still maintain structural integrity? If cracks can no longer be seen, then significant structural failure would go entirely unnoticed as they would be somewhat hidden by the bacteria's patch-job. This could add significant difficulty in identifying problem areas and remove the ability to predict structural failure, and could result in buildings (specifically bridges or other load-bearing structures) presumed as safe and then collapsing without warning.

John Maxwell Structural failure in concrete is caused by the steel rebar inside concrete weakening do to being exposed to water and oxygen by cracks. If you can seal the crack before the steel begins to rust then no structural damage occurs. Also since the bacteria only seals thin cracks and not large cracks that can indicate rebar damage there should be no concern for hidden structural damage. BTW I test and inspect building materials for a living. One of the biggest things I look for before l will let someone pour concrete is rebar placed in a way that will be exposed to the air.

John Maxwell Also acid rain or regular water for that matter would over time wear though limestone (which is how a sinkhole is formed). But it would take longer for that to happen, on the range of thousands of years, then the bacteria would still work to fill cracks which the video says is 200 years. At that point the structure would either already have been replaced or start needing conventional repairs.

Its actually asphalt that's secreted because that's basically what limestone is made out of.
@texasforever7887
@texasforever7887 8 жыл бұрын
erisislove Thats not quite correct. Limestone is a natural material (a rock) that is found around the world. Asphalt is a way different material that is made from mixing what is basically a type of artificial glue and aggregate (usually limestone). Concrete is cement mixed with sand and aggregate (also usually limestone) and usually is reinforced with steel bars for tensile strength. The bacteria produce limestone to fill cracks in the concrete. Asphalt is mostly artificial while concrete is made from natural materials unless chemicals are added to increase setting up time and strength.

Cracks compromise the structural integrity of the concrete surface. I see how this solution fills the cracks but how much structural integrity is returned? Unless it is significant, I would only see this as a solution to address the aesthetics of cracked concrete. I found it rather odd that the video didn't seem to address this statistic.

+Mine Father This may help prevent large cracks from forming in the first place which could prevent any loss in structural integrity later on
@texasforever7887
@texasforever7887 8 жыл бұрын
Mine Father The structural integrity of concrete (tensile strength) comes from the steel rebar placed inside of it not the concrete itself. Cracks cause the rebar to be exposed to water and oxygen causing the rebar to rust and weaken. Over time this causes the rebar to fail. So if you can seal the crack before the rebar rust you prevent the structure from failing.
