Hey Chris. I'm a subscriber from Jamestown, Ohio down the road from you but been retired here in the Philippines for the last 11 years. I bought a Hennessey Hammock last July and set it up in the yard and left it for two months. It faced one major typhoon and some serious monsoon storms. Not a single leak, tear and most of all no bugs inside. These Hammocks are for real. Serious jungle trekkers like me swear by them and when I say jungle I means some serious nasty brutal jungle.

Have a Hennessey Hammock (Asym Safari Deluxe Classic) myself, Really like it alot! Stays with my GoTo bag in primary vehicle. Added a pair of Rap Rings & Carabiners (just like Will does) to the setup and much easier than tying them off. A very good rest in a premium hammock system.

That’s the same as mine, it’s one of the biggest they offer, and since my boyfriend and I really dig each other we both fit. The other benefit is that it has the double bottom, so mosquitoes can’t bite through. It’s easy enough to customize and got the larger Hex-Rainfly. Now they offer when you customize you can specify longer tree hugger straps and also get water collector funnels for the tarp ends that help add tension in rainy weather. It’s a great system.

I agree with Will. I like the concept of the split hammock, but if you have to get into your sleeping bag before you get in the hammock then your bag will get dirty, muddy or snowy. I have been looking for a while to get a hammock and this one just made the top of my list.....thanks guys and keep up the good vids

I have the Explorer Deluxe with bottom entry also. Use two spring gates on each end with the rap ring setup. No problem getting in and out of my sleeping bag. Also you can sit outside the screen if you want. So many ways to set the fly on these. Love it! Good to see you do a review on one.

I have exact same hammock The Explorer Asym. I use the exact same setup with the rings and biners. its truly amazing. so fast and easy to setup. I prefer the side zip. I am 350 lbs and never had any issue with this. Love sleeping off the ground.

I've had my Classic style Hennessey Explorer for 2 years now, and I must say that it is the best shelter I have used thus far. I paired it w/ Hennessey's Humongous hexfly giving me ample working space/shade. If you've got the money to spend on a top of the line quality shelter then Hennessey is definitely a great rout. Also anyone out there who hasn't tried hammock camping should really give it a try at least once.

I got a bottom entry Hennessy and ended up getting zippers added later (2QZQ). I also changed the suspension (whoopie slings) and tarp (HammockGear)... OK, I like to mod my gear. Still love the comfort. The hammock is asymmetrical so you haven't a real choice in which side you put your feet, although Chris seemed comfortable enough here laying the wrong way :) I keep my tarp in a second set of (mesh) snake skins because I tie it to the trees separately so it doesn't sag when I get in the hammock, and so I can deploy the tarp alone for cooking under. The bottom entry can be quite restricting as to where you can buy underquilts if you want to go that way for warmth.

I liked this hammock right up until it ripped on me. I got to set up and play with that one before I sent it to you but I didn't get to do an overnighter in it. I am NOT a fan of the bottom entry. It was just way more of a pain in the butt to use than the side entry that I'm used to. It is nice to set up though.

Chris another good video. Don't know if I'll be using a hammock anytime soon but I'll be sleeping good with my nootropics. Here is a complimentary suggestion on future videos 1. How to prep with kids (having specific items for different ages) 2. Possible items you shouldn't buy-across the board, clothes that don't fit, materials that are not reputable. 3. How many batteries to have on hand even if you have 18650s available but cannot charge. That was just a few, love your channel and you are still doing excellent reviews and analysis. I'm already prepped cause I have the PM101 Velcro patch on my edc bag. Thanks

Another great video Chris. I think I prefer will's hammock as it looks easier to insulate underneath, having a side zip. I'm with you on needing a bigger tarp but I think they make a bigger one as an optional extra.

Thanks for the video ! I have used the HH for a long time now (original Asym). It is a good hammock overall IMHO. I replaced all of my guy lines with shock cord and use a carbiner and a rap ring on each end to secure the hammock (carabiner on end secured with figure 8 loop and rap ring on line with a munter hitch). I do use an 8x10 silnylon tarp in lieu of the provided one. I slept in mine during Hurricane Katrina during the storm and got a little wet with the original tarp. As you said a bigger tarp gives you more than just a hammock cover option (always good IMHO). In extreme mosquito conditions you will get bit wherever your body is against the bottom without something between the the hammock and you in my experience. In winter and early spring I use an underquilt ( Arrow Head Equipment) and they make awesome stuff. I have slept in the high 30's with said quilt and a MSS patrol bag comfortably.

Suggestion, you can wrap your headlamp around the ridge line in order to read at night...Place a tarp below the hammock to keep the rest of your gear clean.

You should checkout the Warbonnet Blackbird XLC and Dutchware suspension hardware. I used to use the climbing rings like Will, but I felt they were kinda heavy and noisy. The Dutchware stuff is super light weight and insanely fast to setup.

Good review. Personally I love my mix-and-match setup more. Snugpak tropical hammock with ENO Atlas straps, a ENO Talon Ridgeline Organizer and a Yukon Outfitters Walkabout Rainfly Tarp. All together about $140. I really like the Hennessy Snakeskins and am thinking about adding those to the mix. Great way to keep setup simple.

I am a hammock fan and use them all the time for my hikes. The primary concern is heat loss. I tried every method to stay warm and for me the only working method is an outside liner. So, I prefer a traditional hammock and a 20 degree mummy bag that is altered to make an outer liner. With a Hennessey you need to drop the funds to buy an outer liner.
@preparedmind101

Have you tried an MMSS?
@AWalkOnDirt
@AWalkOnDirt 8 жыл бұрын
I don't know what MMSS means but I have experimented with a wide range of pads inside the hammock. I move TONS when I sleep. In two weeks I am starting a very long hike and I can't experiment anymore. I like my system. I have a simple hammock, rain fly, a modified mummy bag for an outer liner, and a sleeping bag liner for inside the hammock.

Getting in to hammocks? For me it's the only way to camp. In stead of using an military sleep system just go strait to a proper hammock quilt. Not sure about an under quilt with a Hennessey but definitely better options then mss.

True, a good quality quilt will cost more. But if your going to drop $300 on a hammock system then you shouldn't skimp on insulation. I've tried to save money my sleep system for the hammock, but in the end purchased the right gear. It makes the difference on those unexpectedly cold nights. Trust my though I'm not knocking the cost savings. We could all use a little more green in our pockets.

Since I don't move around a lot in hammocks, the MMSS works fine for me, and I already have two. I don't PERSONALLY have the need or desire for that really expensive hammock luxury stuff. Before long you're sleeping in a $1000 hammock.

bottom entry is neat, but isnt that just an open wind slot and bug portal ?! You have all the other bug screen sewn in, or the other one that is totally zipped shut, but this needs to be overlapped to make sure that the slot is truly closed up.
