Métaboles is an orchestral work by Henri Dutilleux, commissioned by the conductor George Szell in 1959 to mark the fortieth anniversary of the Cleveland Orchestra. Métaboles was composed in 1963-64 and was first performed by Szell and the Cleveland Orchestra on 14 January 1965. In the early 1960s, Dutilleux wanted to move away from traditional musical forms and develop new structures that changed according to the internal logic of a particular piece. It is with this central concern in mind, a concern that the work's very title indicates, that he began to compose Métaboles. In the composer's own words:
The rhetorical term Métaboles, applied to a musical form, reveals my intention: to present one or several ideas in a different order and from different angles, until, by successive stages, they are made to change character completely.
The piece is cast in five overlapping movements that are played without pause. Each section, except the last one, highlights a particular instrumental group, allowing Métaboles to be described as concerto for orchestra.

This is the kind of score that I would print out and have it on my desk so that I can consult it when I compose or orchestrate.

This is Dutilleux's "breakout" piece, coming after the 2nd Symphony (itself a masterpiece but in a relatively more conventional way). "Metaboles" is astonishingly imaginative and ravishing. Music of a higher realm.

Lineaire is easily one of the most ravishing, captivating string passages for orchestra.

Absolute masterpiece. Like a combination of Koechlin's "Les Bandar-Log", Messiaen, and Lutoslawski.

@@RyanPower just want to let you know that, yes these kind of videos wont get much views, since classical music has such a small audience, and even smaller amount of people listen to contemporary scores.. BUT, for those who stumble across videos like these, we cant thank you and other uploaders enough. You guys are truly doing god's work

I started making videos myself because I felt the same way towards other score video creators. It's great to be able to listen to music and have the scores to read at the same time, especially for much lesser known works such as this, and I think it's great to get more people to find music that they've never heard before. But thank you very much for your comment, it's great to hear from other people who are also passionate about music nowadays! :)))

Henri was a master of fascinating music that is completely forgettable. This is an incredibly inventive score with no song for you to hum on the way home after the concert.

and what is wrong with that? Since when is memorability the most important element of music?

You don't need to remember a melody to remember the piece. Like how you don't need to remember funny quotes or quips to know if you like a person.
