I am the beloved son of God; on me God's favor rests. I am chosen, blessed, broken, and given... everyday. I am grateful and humbled indeed, to be an instrument of God's love in my daily life.

What a timeless message. The truths shared in his sermon are as relevant today as they were during his time.

i believe that henri nouwen will be known in history as one of the greatest spiritual guides of the 20th century. he was able to explain well not only in words but above all through his actions that our woundedness and brokenness are not hindrances to sanctity but rather means in order to attain it. our being children of God doesn't reside on what we do but on who we are. nouwen helped us to understand that to be holy doesn't reside so much on what we do for God but on what God does for us. sanctity is allowing God to love us despite and in spite of who we are.

When I first heard this it had such a profound impact fro me. Thank you for posting this so I can hear it again. I know that if I am not grounded in a sense of being OK just the way I am, then my attempts to serve others will be poisoned by my neediness and greediness. But if I can feel loved in a deep, fundamental way, then I can serve others with love.

This "First Love" life (I John 4:19) is a life lived grounded in the Ground of All Being, a life conformed to the pattern of Jesus Christ, a life empowered by the Holy Spirit -- a life that is a participation in God's own life that transcends the "ups and downs" of our individual lives, a life that participates%2

I am deeply troubled by those who attack Henri because he was born gay. Henri's life was totally dedicated to Jesus Christ in every dimension--spiritually, psychologically, and in his commitment to follow the Gospel message that God is Love. Henri felt that whether one is gay or straight is irrelevant to God because we are all created in the image of the God of love. Those who hate others for any reason are already living in hell; and yet, they too are God's beloved.

I've encountered this teaching at different times for the past 10 years. A friend gives me a CD, youtube, and class assignments etc. Each time it challenges me. Each time the knowledge of who I am sinks a little further from my head to my heart. Thanks so very much for posting!

Henri Nouwen was indeed celibate. He has never practiced his homosexual feelings. It has been a great struggle for him. However, he never gave in (according to himself "for the sake of Christ") because he considered sexuality a sacred gift between a man and a woman...

EVERYONE CRITICIZING HENRI NOUWEN SHOULD READ BEFRIENDING LIFE ESPECIALLY AFTER ADAM DIED HENRI NOUWEN WAS A WONDERFUL MAN WHO CARED AND CONNECTED TO THE DISBABLED, HE TREATED THEM AS BROTHERS AND SISTERS, STUDENTS BUT ALSO TEACHERS, THEY WERE HIS FAMILY. WE SHOULD ALL LEARN FROM WHAT THE PEOPLE HE ASSISTED HAD TO SAY BECAUSE THEY KNEW HIM BEST

He may have done nice things , but teaching a false gospel is not good . People may say nice things about him, that doesn’t matter ...What is important is what God says about him ..

I got a little bit emotional when he was drawing out the line on the graph and put "2010" as the end of the line... I so wish he'd gotten those extra 14 years. He is resting in the bosom of Christ, and for that we must rejoice, but for those of us left here on earth, the years of his life that he didn't get are an indescribable loss.

I have read all that Henri left for us, and he clearly lived the life of the beloved and gave himself away and asked for nothing in return. So many judging posts on here. Very sad. Your judgment blinds you to the truth and beauty of Henri's life and teaching.

@TheChaseair Funny your comment is based on his lifestyle, but you overlook the truth of his message. Truth can be spoken through the most broken people and usually is.

I see upthread that some people are discussing homosexuality. Did you know that Henri Nouwen was gay? Seriously. If you rea the introduction of the book "The Essential Henri Nouwen" edited by Robert A. Jonas, he talks about how Henri's homosexuality was something he rarely disclosed and he never wanted it to distract from his message, which he talks about in this video. Yes, Henri was celibate; he was an RC priest, after all.

"Today I personally believe that while Jesus came to open the door to God's house, all human beings can walk through that door, whether they know about Jesus or not. Today I see it as my call to help every person claim his or her own way to God." -From Sabbatical Journey, Henri Nouwen's last book page 51, 1998 Hardcover Edition Oh yeah, he's spiritual all right, and if he believed this, burning in hell as we speak. You can speak eloquently, and seem very sincere & be sincerely wrong. Jesus himself said "if it were possible, to deceive even the very elect".

Hey there, I was wondering if you felt comfortable with someone downloading this series of videos for the purpose of uploading it on their own channel. Someone who runs a local ministry wants to just make sure that these videos are not ever lost or unaccessible. please let me know in reply to this comment or contact curtis.kent@cbcstittsville.com thru email. Thank you.

How can a discussion on the sermon "Being the Beloved" turn to homosexuality. Keep it relevant people, you missed what this sermon was all about. Those comments cheapen the message and had absolutely nothing to do with being gay.

@1macboo For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; This certainly is a general statement condemning sin. I suppose you meant by your first comment that the Bible does not condemn homosexuality. By this chapter, it is shown that God abominates the practice. You did know that you need to be born again to see the kingdom of Heaven?

@1macboo In Romans Chapter 1 : For this cause God gave them up to vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. Not speaking of homosexuals? Eternal damnation is a long time my twisted friend.
