Henrietta Lacks: The 'immortal' cells that changed the world - BBC REEL

In 1951, Henrietta Lacks, a black woman from Baltimore, USA, died of cancer. However, cells taken from her body without her knowledge continued to grow and multiply even after her death. They became the first 'immortalised human cell line' and changed medical science forever.
HeLa cells have helped to create cancer treatments, vaccines and have even furthered our understanding of space travel. Now, 100 years on from Henrietta's birth, her immortal cells are helping researchers develop a Covid-19 vaccine.

There is a high chance that there was no law against it at the time. Along with that I don't see any reason to sue. This didn't effect their lives in many ways. The harvesting of her tumor cells saved so many lives. The only reasons for them to sue would be to fire a doctor for something he did 69 years ago.. considering that anyone from there is still alive or working there. Or if you read the book as her daughter says many times for money.

@@ryanmoon5431 They deserve compensation for those cells that have saved so many lives. Although a lack of consent law existing at the time does not change the ethically reprehensible actions of the doctor at the time, and fails to acknowledge the racial inequities that are embedded in the healthcare system. Keep in mind, none of the biotechnology or other companies that have profited from her cells passed any money back to her family, and this repeated lack of consent endured for decades and even publishing her genome online. Righting 'historical' (sheesh it's only been 70 years) wrongs is a step towards reconciliation with racial inequities in the medical industry.
@jeff__w
@jeff__w 2 жыл бұрын
@@ryanmoon5431 There wouldn't necessarily have to be “a law against it” (whatever “it” is) at the time. There _could_ be a lawsuit based on some theory of _restitution_ - something was taken from one person and others benefited from that taking (probably in the billions of dollars for various pharmaceutical companies) while the family of that person received nothing. (Of course, there might be some statute of limitations issues.) I’d be _very_ surprised if the Lacks family were not advised as to their legal rights and remedies-and, in fact, just two days ago (as of this comment), there was an article discussing a lawsuit by the heirs of Henrietta Lacks. _See_ “Henrietta Lacks' heirs sue for cut of medical research profits. Are they too late?” in _Reuters._

@@blackzar09 That's incorrect because there are plenty of black people in history who are very well known. And in all hospitals I've been too there's at least one board (usually near the cancer treatment rooms) with a poster including information about Henrietta and how her cells improved medicine.

They could just use someone else cell line then. They have many more now, she was just the first. While I agree it was morally wrong, it was not illegal at the time and therefore they cannot successfully sue for compensation. Keep in mind this was the time when they thought hammering ice picks into people's brains was a good idea
