The thing about Warhammer is the level of raw violence, mature themes, terror, and pure zealotry. That’s a HUGE mountain for people to overcome. It needs to be done RIGHT. If it isn’t… GW will NEVER allow it to get onto the screen again.

The problem is Warhammer isn't as mainstream as a lot of fans think it is. Those of us who know, understand that most of it is satire. Nobody would actually cheer for a universe that unironically takes Heinlein or Orson Scott Card, cranks them both to eleven and plasters very obvious religious undertones drawing heavily on a corrupted take on the messianic archetype. Cavill's project will probably get massive praise from fans, but we'll very obviously have to weather criticism from people who don't understand what's being conveyed - and that goes both ways. I'm always glad to yell Imperium-related memes with someone else if it's done in good faith, but seeing people use Warhammer as a justification for ACTUAL bigotry is something I've sadly seen happen in the past. I think we can all recall fanart that cast Trump as the God-Emperor of Man, for instance. At that level, no amount of us posting essays that go into the setting's satirical leanings will ever appease those who lean on outrage content for views, or who drape Reactionary politics under a thin veneer of "leftism". Saying Cavill rejects "woke" agendas in the context of a WH40K production is like saying water is wet. And yet, you'll still find shrill idiots unaware of the full unit roster in the lore who'll throw a fit at the sight of a Sister of Battle because "wamen in my vidyas". Guaranteed.

@@McSquiddington Oh I can hear the cries over Adepta Sororitas. "What? Nuns with guns?" Cavill wants to stick true the lore which has nothing to do with being anti woke. It is like people objecting to Jackson and his adaptation of both LotR and the Hobbit, that he did not stay true to the lore. My oldest nephew was poo pooing this 40K project in how there is nothing really to make a movie. They are just a bunch of xenophobes. I just looked at him. Umm, uncle lived and breathed Epic and 40K in the 1990s. I spent well over $15K on both games. There is SOOOO much they can do with this universe. That is what attracted me to the game, the pseudo history. Plus not like in the lore they do not have good reason to be xenophobic. It is not like they are just othering Orks so people hate them. Orks are trying to destroy humies. We could have the whole Horus Heresy, the current timeline and focus on one particular chapter, could show battles with the Orks with huge Imperial Guard armies, even take from the offshoot games like Necromunda and have a straight up cop drama in a hiveworld and the crime syndicate, etc that inhabit the lower levels. And yeah a whole series on just the Sisters of Battle and it would be Cavill following the lore. I always tried to imagine the type of music that would be for a scene such as entering the golden throne like the early terminator movies but louder and grandeur with echoing off the huge columns and vaulted ceiling in the presence of the Emperor of Man. I do not relate 40K though with the real world. It is just fiction. And yes, this game is not mainstream. On some FB page someone posted this priest praying literally over an engine in some 3rd world country and most were just posting how stupid religion is but the first thing that popped into my head was "Adeptus Mechanicus -- All Hail the Machine God." WHICH is another idea for a series, a titan crew. Few who even played the game know there are people inside of those things. Anyway, I got like two laughs for that post btw. Just two people understood my reference.

This is exactly where I think it will fail, even with Henry involved. People are not used to this kind of hard content and if they try to appeal to most people, they will inevitably change it one way or another to make it appealing to sensitive people. The problem to overcome here will be the very nature of the content, which shouldn't be modified. But they will, if they want to make money out of it.

That's the issue with Warhammer: either you can look past the outré gags that make your average 2000 AD comic seem tame, or the jokey layer leaves no trace and you're left with an overwrought attempt at trolling. Fans are at least *aware* of that toxicity, but some people see it as Warhammer's main claim to fame - when it really is an excessively granular wargame in its essence.

That is most likely due to him (unlike most of the higher ups and executives ) actually also being a consumer/client of these same products. There is something to be said for people actually knowing what it is they are selling, why they are selling it and who they are selling it to. Understanding the product and what gives it value should be a requirement, especially when dealing with 4 billion dollar worth IPs, I would say. Yet we keep seeing people in charge of billion dollar IPs who haven't got the slightest idea of what gives said IP it's value. That is why they keep destroying them, it's not mallice, it's sheer incompitence mixed with arrogance. Because be it not for the arrogance, they would have found more compitent people and employed them years ago. Some say it is them wanting to leave their mark on the IP is the problem, but these people forget that good adaptations of the past have ALL had the creatives leave their mark on the IP, the differance was, those marks were ussually and improvement or a great addition to the IP. The problem again, is arrogance mixed with incompitence.

Confidently hopeful GW and Henry have made a strong deal that will keep Amazon from meddling in the production. If they can write these so that they're faithful to the source as well as accessible to new fans then this could be truly long lived and successful. They need to keep the show grounded and fairly small scale especially in early seasons to build momentum and popularity. The magnitude of the setting works best when that's not the focus all the time. It really benefits from being seen from a fairly regular human perspective. Many fans have already mentioned this but star Cavill as an Inquisitor which would enable the story to easily switch setting and introduce different factions naturally.

I've been a massive WH40k fan ever since the late 90's. My brother and I would fantasize about all the epic battles and stories we read and always return to one though: "Could you imagine if they did a 40k movie with the scope and vision of Peter Jackson's LoTR trilogy?". Cinema has come a long way since those days, but I'm not one bit less excited about a top quality 40k cinematic universe! There is just one thing they need to get correct, and that is Warhammer's theme of "Grim Dark". Games Workshop have described their setting as "to be alive during the most bloody and oppressive regime imaginable". Sure, you can (and should) have some light heart-ed moments, but this the war at the end of time for the fate of the galaxy! Death to the mutant, the heretic, the alien! For the glory of mankind, and may the Emperor bless your soul!

There have been many Warhammer games that I have played with my friends that I wish I could see an animated version of it. I think that would be a unique idea for a show. At the being of the show you have two players ready to battle, but then it immediately goes in the animation of the game play. Best part you can have actual players bringing in their army's to show off.

What you need to know is it started in '83 with the fantasy version (plain "Warhammer"), then '87 with the sci-fi version ("WH40k," 40,000 being the year AD), both as affectionate parodies of their entire genres (not "umm ackchewally political satire" despite what The People Who Ruin Franchises will try to tell you). Both became more serious and coherent over time, and 40k fully transitioned to an internally-serious self-contained setting mostly in one step at its 3rd edition in '98 (WH was always a few edition-numbers ahead and did it more gradually). Both are, very broadly, about how humanity survives while besieged on all sides and from within. Wow, you're right. Since GoT ended, I honestly can't think of a single western TV series I gave a hoot about. Rings of Power? Resident Evil? One Piece(Live)? Witcher? Cowboy Bebop(Live)? What I wanna see, for the tabletop gamers, is clear hints at the forgotten world of Warhammer... While it is absolutely hell, there are places of relative quiet... There are many worlds in Warhammer, many are completely unaware of the universe around them to the point that Earth, as we are aware of it today, could vary easily fit into the 40k universe, not as the 40k earth of course, but worlds like it. It adds to the mystery, wonder and terror of the 40k universe.

I'm a woman, wife and mother. I feel chased out of everything I'm a fan of while being told these changes are supposed to appeal to me because I'm a woman. Comics, Star Wars, lotr, mtg, dnd (5e sucks). I'm on the games/books/lore side of Warhammer. I absolutely love it and am going on year 3 of being a fan. How owlcat protected rogue trader by not folding to make it more like bg3 in the "romance" aspect gives me faith. I'm pulling for the show's success, but I've been here before, so I won't hold my breath. No remorse. No pity. No fear.

I think it would be difficult for 40k to be the flagship franchise. People don't like ambiguity. They also don't like exposition dumps. It will be tough to get people up to speed fast enough to tell a story fully immersed in the universe. The best they could do is go with small stories that lend themselves to fish out of water characters that diegetically ask questions the audience wants to know. Examples could include: Following a group of friends from a feudal world as they are being inducted into a founding of Astra Militarum. Living a simple life and then thrust into a brutal campaign in a savage universe wholly foreign to their pastoral home world. A manufactorum worker slaving away for hours a day finds themselves wrongly accused of heresy or sabotage. Having no options they flee into the under hive, ironically joining up with a gang or cult to survive. Yet they must prove their worth with increasingly dangerous missions, and have to rise in this new hierarchy while constantly watching their back and evading the Arbities. Someone awakens as a psyker, and is abducted by the black ships. However, before it can arrive on Holy Terra - the black ship crashes into a space hulk. Now the guards and their prisoners need to band together to find a way off the hulk. But they aren't the only ones on the mammoth derelict, Tyranid Bioforms, Orks, and daemons wage an endless war among the labyrinthine non-Euclidean gothic chambers. The good thing about all of these is, they would be self contained. You wouldn't need flow charts or reference an index or glossary every five minutes. Everybody would essentially be an average joe that is just as confused as anybody in the audience. They'd go from a world that is normal-ish, to one that weird but still close enough to understand. My worry is that they're going to try to do the Horus Heresy, Eisenhorn, or the Dark Imperium. They can't pull it off, because those need to be built up first. They need small scale stories, with tangible stakes, and a small cast of characters. No fate of the Galaxy crap.

What's funny is that Warhammer 40k is actually pretty woke. The only positions in the Imperium with certain "discriminations" are the Astartes (men only) and the Sororitas (women only), otherwise, any rank and job is open to anyone as long as you are competent and do your duty for the betterment of The Imperium and humanity as a whole. Lots of strong independent women, a whole army of them even, human ethnicity is meaningless as long as you serve and die for the Emperor and not a filthy fucking heretic. Like the equality and acceptance they so covet is ironically right there in the grim darkness of the far future. Because they have bigger and worse things to worry about than someone's gender, sexuality, or skin colour of their fellow humans. You fight, you die, you will serve. Because whatever you are, know that you are fuel for the engines of war. You're here because the Emperor deems it so, and if given the word, by all the countless wars that has filled the galaxy, you will fight until you die, so it has been, so it shall be.

Warhammer 40K is already a satire of Authoritarian Theocratic Militaristic Imperialism, its explicit in how horrible the Imperium is and that 40K universe is frikkin doomed and the message is "When faced with unstoppable existential threats, Authoritarianism isn't going to save you." And let's be honest 40,000 years in the future, the politics would be literally alien to us, The Hierarchical politics vs Egalitarian politics that exist today won't exist as we know it that far in time.

I'm a huge WH40k fan. I used to play the table top game but now im more into reading the books. I'm hoping they do something post heresy and focus in on the Inquisition or the Black Templars. Tagging along with the Black Templars on their 10,000 year imperial crusade conquering worlds in the name of the emperor would be something i would love to watch.

I never liked Cavill's portrayal of Geralt, I think he was extremely miscast and doesn't fit the role at all. Though I applaud him for his dedication to the role. That said, I really like that he's taking a stand against the woke garbage and tries his best to do the actual source content justice. It's funny. Henry Cavill's last major show was Witcher, which is about 70% a direct ripoff of Elric of Melnibonè. Now he's off to Warhammer which has ripped off every major fantasy and sci-fi property since the 60's, including Elric of Melnibonè! The problem with all that established "lore" and "backstory" is that it gets in the way of whatever screenwriter hack from "being original" because it's already written. Lie you said, if these companies would just stay true to the source material, they'd have a home run. Amazon is still the company that has given us the excellent sci-fi book adaptation that is The Expanse, as well as the excellent Jack Ryan and Reacher adaptations. So they only seem to screw the pooch when making fantasy series (Wheel of Time and Rings of Power). And with Henry having actual control of things this time, I'm much more confident that they'll make something epic.

Before anyone gets too excited we MUST remember to following… 1, Warhammer already has a streaming service, Warhammer tv. It’s expensive and now in its third year. It does have some really good shows but is mostly arse. And al animation. They famously scoured fan fiction from KZbin and poached Astartes and placed it on Warhammer plus+. 2, Warhammer has thrown its lot in with ID politics back either just before or after lockdowns in a Spanish game tournament, releasing a statement saying ‘Warhammer is for everyone and if you don’t like it you can leave’ not the most egregious comments admittedly but they do wallow in that area too. Cavill is a mega fan. And it’s awesome that he has this project. But don’t underestimate Warhammer ability to cock thing right up….

WH40K doesn't even have to give up on strong female characters either after all there's an entire faction dedicated to that concept the Adeptus Sororitas. Not to mention any female psykers, guardsmen, commissars, Eldar, or Dark Eldar that all have strong female representation. The problem with current female representation in media is that it always has to be this "Anything you can do I can do better" mentality which Hollywood and other producers need to move away from. I enjoy seeing strong female characters on screen but whenever they have to do this "Oh look at me, a female character, mary sueing all over the place" it gets annoying and instantly pulls me out. I can no longer immerse myself because every time the female character does anything they have to have this moment where she looks at the camera and says "look I can do it just as good as they can if not better."
