I have his autobiography. I loved that he was rebellious - too bad we don't have any rebels nowadays, except Roger Waters.... I heard Henry Morgan on Mort Sahl's temporary guest-hosting of The Tonight Show (considered to replace Paar, but went to Carson) is VERY great. I wish someone would upload it. There's so many archives sold, and I've tried to gather my 2,500 subscribers to put $1 each toward archives, because they keep going bad (reels), but also fires, fading away. There's been 2 big fires at Universal, losing the master tapes of Billie Holiday and many others. And now I'm at the stage I might not ever be able to see these :(

Henry Morgan was a complex guy who, in spite of his demons, outlived a good number of his contemporaries--the man's career stretched from being a primordial shock jock to living into the early Clinton years. But I remember reading Arnold Stang's comments about Morgan; he said that Morgan just simply couldn't stop self-defeat, and would always be his own worst enemy. In my opinion, some of Morgan's best work was substitute-hosting for Garry Moore on "I've Got a Secret" in the early '60s (had he not been so prickly, Morgan was very adept at hosting a game show), and his mid-to-late-'60s work as a rotating host of NBC"s "Monitor", where he's quite comfortable spinning easy listening records of the day and navigating a magazine format for a pretty sophisticated network program.

Seeing Henry embrace his Mother is my favorite Morgan moment. You gave a very nice overview, but I would love to have you flesh it out. He was not a sympathizer and said so during his existing appearance on The Tonight Show in 1964. I never knew that he was beaten by his father. That says a lot about his personality.

Kimberly for YEARS I only knew Henry from his irascible persona on What's My Line? I got to dislike him as much as I disliked Hal Bloch! But after watching a SLEW of I've Got a Secret shows from the 1950s! I came to really LIKE HIM! So - I do wonder if there wasn't something between him a Bennett Cerf that we didn't know about! THANK YOU FOR THIS!@ ♥

Both Henry Morgans were born in 1915 and neither was named Henry Morgan at the time.

Great photos and research. Adjust sound and speak more slowly, pleeease. Cool topic you've uncovered. Can't hear or understand your words, though.

Thumbs down because of the audio and the host is just speaking a little too fast for my comfort. Thank goodness for closed captioning.

First of all, so called "Henry Morgan" wasn't his real name. There was nothing wrong with his actual birth name of Henry Lerner von Ost Jr . Most likely the change was made as the result of a greedy Studio or Business Manager, with perceived notions of greater recognition accompanied with monetary gains? In reality, it's also shows blatant disrespect for one's parents & their family heritage, just to possibly obtain (not earn) a greater buck?! The ONLY reason a name change should be done, is for a woman when she gets married. If a woman gets married and DOESN'T change her name, then she doesn't accept the sanctity of marriage.

A little research reveals that Henry himself was opposed to using the moniker of Morgan. The reason for the use of that name instead of Von Ost? He was told that it was too exotic sounding and would be difficult to pronounce. I don’t know if he got more money over time because of that name change but nevertheless, it served him well. If he decided to use that name, it was really his business and no one else’s. Any opinions to the contrary are actually moot.

@@gwenniegirl50 Thanks for your input, Gwen. All I know is I'd never disrespect my Father for anyone or any reason. Furthermore , it's deceitful. Ross
