Weirdly enough, a little earlier today, I was listening to an old “Let’s Do This!” back from the Spill days where Korey was talking about the fact that he was having to wait for hours and hours at ComicCon 2010 for an interview that would last a couple of minutes at best. Now, he’s interviewing one of his heroes for over an hour, chatting as if they were good friends. Talk about progress.

Sad to hear how Disney treated The Shadow King. Shame that they're afraid of taking bigger risks, it's okay to be weird! Selick's ambivalent feelings about the project and how it ended is understandable. Great to hear that he got the rights back for the movie. Really good interview!

This guy's a legend, huge get for an interview. And if it's any consolation, Henry, Monkey Bone made a big impression on me as a kid. The ending scenes was a sort of sexual awakening

22:20 A few years ago, “who directed The Nightmare Before Christmas” was the final question in a Disney trivia contest. I got my team to wager everything, and we beat the second place team by 88 points! But for many years, I would get mildly annoye when people didn’t acknowledge Selick. Like when “Coraline” came out, I had to nicely school some people in the truth.

Underrated sequence director too. One of his very first jobs was being a sequence director on a little known movie called "Twice Upon a Time". He was also known for his MTV bumpers back in the late 80s.

I would like to see Henry Selick work with Brandon Fraser again as a voice actor. Fraser is such a good voice actor in things like Doom Patrol.

I really enjoyed this interview. I like how you approached it by touching on his entire career. It felt almost like a timeline and very biographical. Great thumbnail too.

Great interview of one of my favorite animators from my childhood! I kinda wish you brought up James and the Giant Peach since it's really overshadowed by TNBC in recent years and the live-action/stop-motion works quite well there. The Grasshopper on the top right corner also kept catching my eye! Bringing up Monkeybone was a bold move, though. Definatly interested in seeing what the original vision for that film would've been.

Korey, can’t wait to hear your interview with Dave Willis. Please ask about the fate of Squidbillies and his work on Archer and of course Sealab. Also worth watching the Movies That Made Us episode on Netflix. Harry and crew did an amazing recollection on how the movie came to be.

I just read that Henry was mad cause Tim Burton gets the credit for nightmare before Christmas when Henry directed it. Lol but Tim Burton wrote it and created all the characters. Crazy. Henry does get credit for directing it so I don't understand why he's upset cause It's called Tim Burtons nightmare before Christmas. It is still Tim Burtons movie.

Both deserve a lot of credit on the film, but Selick is the one actually moving the characters around and he does deserve the recognition. It's a common sight to see Henry Selick's style attributed to Burton. Because Burton was also a minor producer on James and the Giant Peach, several people thought Burton directed THAT film too. Even when Coraline was released without Burton's involvement, people assumed it was by him when the trailer said it was from 'the director of The Nightmare Before Chrismas.' Even Neil Gaiman got frustrated with this in the latter case.
@scottmcbride2237

@Hard-Boiled I understand that and if you read my comment I said that he got credit for directing but Burton did write it and created the characters. It's his film. That's why it has his name on it. You wouldn't have the film or the story without Burton. It's like a few of George Remeros films along with many others that wrote movies while other people directed them. You can't get mad and jealous cause the person that wrote the story and created the characters gets most of the credit. I mean what about the actors they are hired by the creator to play the rolls. Just like they pay for a director to direct the film. It's just sad. If he wants full cridet then he needs to do the writing of the story which he has and now he gets cridet for. It isn't like he didn't get cridet for directing a nightmare before Christmas. He's to talented to get upset about this. Plus Selick got crideted on the animation also.

@@scottmcbride2237 Tim Burton wrote the original poem and the characters of Jack, Zero, and (this interpretation of) Santa, who were the only characters in the original poem. Burton provided the initial pitch but much of the story in the film was written and rewritten by several people in a collaborative process with Burton only being a light touch since he was in a different city directing Batman Returns. If anything, Danny Elfman needs to be credited in the main story writing process in addition to music and score. I'm unsure of the exact amount of how much of the story or script was contributed by Selick, but the storyboards were him and his team. That gigantic Spiral Hill that opens up as Jack walks down? That was Selick's idea. Also spellcheck, man!

@Hard-Boiled lol. Ok. What ever. It essentially still his creation. They still wouldn't have had the idea or the characters, among a lot of other stuff he did with out Burton. This is how any story, no matter if it be book or video goes. Some films the director gets crideit for the mo in but only if he writes it also. Sorry. If you can't understand this then there's nothing else I can say. Lol.
