HENRY THE GREEN ENGINE: (WHISTLES) HEY, IT'S MY OWN OFFICIAL REAL-LIFE LOCOMOTIVE REBUILD COUNTERPART!!!!!!!!!

Once, an engine attached to a train was afraid of the rain. lt went into a tunnel and wouldn't come out again! (Toots) The engine's name is Henry. His driver argued with him but he would not move. "The rain will spoil my lovely green paint. " The guard blew his whistle till he had no more breath but Henry stayed in the tunnel and blew steam at him. "l'm not going to spoil my lovely paint!" Along came Sir Topham Hatt, the man in charge of all the engines. They call him the Fat Controller. "We will pull you out," said the Fat Controller. Everyone pulled except the Fat Controller. He said, "My doctor has forbidden me to pull. " But Henry stayed in the tunnel. They pushed from the other end. The Fat Controller said, "One, two, three, push!" But he didn't help. "My doctor has forbidden me to push. " They pushed and pushed but Henry stayed in the tunnel. Thomas came along. The guard stopped him. Everyone argued with Henry. "lt has stopped raining," they said. "Yes, but it will begin again!" said Henry. Thomas pushed as hard as he could. (Creaking and squeaking) But still Henry stayed in the tunnel. Eventually, even the Fat Controller gave up. "We shall take away your rails and leave you here for always. " They took up the rails and built up a wall so Henry couldn't get out. All he could do was watch the trains rushing past. He was very sad as no one would ever see his lovely green paint again. Edward and Gordon would often pass by. Edward would say, "Peep-peep, hello!" And Gordon would say, "Serves you right!" Henry had no steam to answer. His fire had gone out. Soot from the tunnel had spoilt his lovely paint anyway. He wondered if he would ever pull trains again. But l think he deserved his punishment, don't you? Gordon always pulled the big express. He was proud of being the only engine strong enough to do so and Gordon was seeing how fast he could go. "Hurry, hurry!" he said. "Tickety-tock!" said the coaches. ln a minute he would see Henry, bricked-up and lonely. "Why did l worry about rain spoiling my paint? "Will the Fat Controller ever let me out?" "l'm going to 'poop-poop' at Henry," said Gordon. But suddenly (Hissing) Gordon was going slower and slower! His driver stopped the train. "l feel so weak," said Gordon. "You've burst a safety valve," said the driver. "Oh, dear!" said Gordon, "And look, Henry's laughing at me. " Everyone came to see Gordon. The Fat Controller said, "Big engines always go wrong! Send for another. " They uncoupled Gordon, who had enough puff to move out of the way. Edward was the only engine left. "l'll try!" he said. (Whistles) "Huh!" said Gordon, "That's no use. Edward can't push the train. " Edward puffed and pushed but he couldn't move the coaches. "l told you so," said Gordon. "Why not let Henry try?" "Yes!" said the Fat Controller. "Will you help pull this train, Henry?" "Oh, yes!" said Henry. When Henry had got up steam, he puffed out. "Ooh, l am stiff," he groaned. "Have a run to ease your joints," said the Fat Controller. When Henry came back he felt much better. They coupled him up. "Peep-peep!" said Edward, "l'm ready. " "So am l," said Henry. "Pull hard, we'll do it!" they puffed together. (Whistles) "We've done it together!" they said. "You've done it!" sang the coaches. The Fat Controller leaned out of the window to wave at Edward and Henry but the train was going so fast, his hat blew off and a goat ate it! They never stopped till they came to the station at the end of the line. The Fat Controller promised Henry a new coat of paint. Edward and Henry helped Gordon back to the shed. They are all now great friends. Henry knows the best way to keep his paint nice is to ask his driver to rub him down each day. Henry was feeling sorry for himself. Sometimes he felt he had no strength to pull trains. "l suffer dreadfully and no one cares. " "Rubbish, Henry," snorted James. "You don't work hard enough. " The Fat Controller said, "You cost too much. "Your new parts have done you no good. "We might have to get another engine. " This made Henry and his driver very sad. The Fat Controller was waiting for Henry. He had put on overalls. Henry started but his fireman was unhappy. "Henry is a bad steamer," he said. "His fire doesn't give enough heat. " (Feeble puffing) Henry tried but it was no good. He came to a stop outside Edward's station. "Oh dear", thought Henry. "l shall have to go away. " All he could do was go onto a siding and Edward took charge of the train. (Whistle) The Fat Controller asked the fireman what was wrong with Henry. "The coal is wrong, sir. We've had a poor lot lately. "Henry's firebox is too small to cope. We need Welsh coal. " "lt's expensive but Henry needs a chance. " "James will fetch some. " (Whistling) When the Welsh coal came, Henry's driver and fireman were excited. They put large lumps of coal round the edge of the fire and smaller lumps in the glowing middle. "You're spoiling my fire," complained Henry. "Wait," said the fireman. "We'll have a roaring fire. " When Henry reached the platform, the water was boiling nicely. "How are you, Henry?" "Peep-peep! Fine!" "Have you a good fire?" "Never better. " The Fat Controller warned, "Don't push him. " "Henry won't need pushing, sir. l'll have to hold him back!" (Happy whistling) Henry had never felt so well. He wanted to go fast, but his driver wouldn't let him. "Steady," he said. "There's plenty of time. " They arrived early. Thomas puffed in. "Where have you been, lazybones?" asked Henry. "l can't wait. Goodbye!" "Whoosh! Have you ever seen anything like it?" Annie and Clarabel agreed that they never had. Henry's driver said, "We've got to take the Flying Kipper. "lf we do well, the Fat Controller may let us pull the express. "Your special coal is working well. " "Hurrah!" cried Henry. (Gulls cawing, ship's horn) All kinds of ships use the harbour - passenger and cargo ships and fishing boats unload on the quay. Some fish goes in a special train to places far away. This train is called the Flying Kipper. Henry was ready at five. There was snow. Men loaded the vans with fish. The last door banged and the Flying Kipper was ready to go. (Grinding metal, whistle) "Come on, don't be silly," puffed Henry. The vans shuddered and groaned. "Trop-trick. All right. " "That is better," puffed Henry. Clouds of steam poured from his funnel and the fire's light shone brightly. "Hurry!" panted Henry. They were going well. Signal lights shone green as they passed. His driver prepared to stop at a yellow signal but the home signal was down. "All clear, Henry. Away we go!" But the points to a siding were frozen. The home signal should have said "danger" but snow had forced it down. A goods train was waiting in the siding. lts crew were drinking cocoa. "The Kipper is due. " "Who cares?" "Come on, fireman. Back to our engine. " They got out just in time. (Puffing steam and whistling) (Crunching and booming) Henry's driver and fireman had jumped clear but Henry was dazed. "The signal was down, sir," Henry told the Fat Controller. "Cheer up. Snow caused the accident. " l'm sending you to Crewe. "They'll give you a larger firebox so you won't need special coal. " Henry was doubtful. (Whistle) Henry liked Crewe but was glad to come home. A crowd of people waited to see him. He looked so splendid, they cheered. "Peep-peep! Thank you very much. " Children are often late for school because they wait for Henry. He's often pulling the express. Gordon is jealous. But that's another story. Gordon was cross. "Why should Henry have a new shape? "He goes off to Crewe, leaving us to do his work, "and comes back all happy. Disgraceful. "And Henry whistles too much. lt isn't wrong but we just don't do it. " Henry didn't feel happy any more. "Never mind," whispered Percy. "l'm glad you're home. " "Goodbye," called Gordon. "Remember what l said. " Later, Henry stopped at Edward's station. "Hello, Henry. l was pleased to hear your happy whistle. " "Thanks," smiled Henry. "Can you hear something?" "lt sounds like Gordon. But he never whistles like that. " lt was Gordon, rushing down the hill. He didn't look at Henry or Edward. He screamed straight through. "Well!" said Edward. Henry chuckled and told Edward what Gordon had said. (High whistling) Meanwhile, Gordon screeched along. The noise was awful. (High whistling) At the station, everyone held their ears. - "Take him away, and stop that noise!" - (High whistling) Gordon wouldn't stop whistling until they knocked his whistle valve in place. (Whistling stops) Gordon slunk into the shed, glad it was empty. "lt isn't wrong," murmured Henry, "but we just don't do it. " No one mentioned whistles. Next morning, Henry was enjoying himself. "l feel so well!" "Tickety-tock!" hummed his coaches. He saw some boys on a bridge. "Hello!" he whistled. - (Clattering) - "Oh!" The boys didn't wave. They dropped stones on him. "They've broken our glass," sobbed the coaches. The passengers were cross. "Call the police!" "No," said the driver. "Leave it to us. "Can you keep a secret? Henry's going to sneeze at those boys. Lots of people were waiting at the station to watch. "Henry has plenty of ashes. Keep all windows shut. "Henry's excited, aren't you?" Henry was feeling stuffed up. Soon they saw the boys with stones. "Ready, Henry? Sneeze hard when l tell you. "Now!" "At-choo-shoo!" "Well done, Henry!" laughed his driver. Henry had taught Gordon and silly boys a lesson, with a whistle and a sneeze. Every Henry Episode is Season 1.
