I'm a bass player and I loved it. This came up accidentally on my feed and I'm glad it did. Friends, remember this is a Youth Symphony, and the Conductor should be judged on how he brings out the youth, not on how you think he's "showy", he's attacked an very difficult piece. Yes, the bass players at the start were playing different parts, some of you kiddies missed that, with your comments about them having different bowing styles. Listen again with your eyes closed and you won't see some play French Bow and others play German.

I agree. The first edition by Woytowicz was unknown to many because it was in pre-internet times. The rendition by Devid Zinman and soprano Dawn Upshaw has actually set the trend. I am fortunate to listen to various sopranos singing movement 3. Recently Beth Gibbson soprano recorded in an excellent manner.

Absolute perfection, so delicate at times that one imagines it’ll fall apart. The first third is ever so slightly out of kilter but once the Diva begins the orchestra comes under her spell and goes from strength to strength. Note how the conductor has chosen to dedicate a solo violinist to accompany the Soprano. Bravi.

in the second part of the Symphony, the composer used the text of the inscription carved by 18-year-old Helena Błażusiakówna on the wall of the Gestapo/German/ torture chamber "Palace" in Zakopane, where the young highlander was held in 1944. This text: "O Mother, do not cry, no - Heavenly Chaste Queen, you always support me", ends with the prayer call "Hail Mary".

I've listened to many performances of this beautiful work, but keep coming back to this rendition. I believe it's because it "breathes" more... Something about how the orchestra ebbs and flows beautifully throughout. Intensifying and diminishing at all the right times (for my ear at least). 42:00 onward being a beautiful example. I also love how the conductor treats the 21 A-Major chords at its close... Some almost imperceivable, while he stresses others... the first A chord, then the sixth, eleventh, sixteenth and the last two.. the twentieth and twenty-first... Stunning. 😘

First Movement: "My son, my chosen and beloved Share your wounds with your mother And because, dear son, I have always carried you in my heart, And always served you faithfully Speak to your mother, to make her happy, Although you are already leaving me, my cherished hope". (Lamentation from the collection of medieval passion poems from Benedictine Monastery of St. Cross on Łysa Góra, Poland. Second half of the 15th century. Author unknown). Second Movement: "No, mother, do not weep. Most chaste Queen of Heaven Support me always. Hail Mary, full of grace". (Prayer inscribed on the wall of cell no. 3 in the basement of "Palace" - the Gestapo's headquarters in Zakopane, Poland; Beneath was the signature: Helena Wanda Błażusiakówna, 18 years old, imprisoned since 26 September 1944"). [Helena Błażusiak survived torture without betraying her comrades and then she managed to escape from deportation train to nazi concentration camp. She died in 1999]. Third Movement: "Where has he gone My dearest son? Perhaps during the uprising The cruel enemy killed him Ah, you bad people In the name of God, the most Holy, Tell me, why did you kill My son? Never again Will I have his support Even if I cry My old eyes out Were my bitter tears to create another River Oder They would not restore to life My son He lies in his grave and I know not where Though I keep asking people Everywhere Perhaps the poor child Lies in a rough ditch and instead he could have been lying in his warm bed Oh, sing for him God's little song-birds Since his mother Cannot find him And you, God's little flowers May you blossom all around So that my son May sleep happily". (The folk song from the period of the Silesian Uprisings of 1919-1921).
