HENRYK M. BRODER: “This is bureaucratic barbarism that is taking place here! | Opinion at midday
The death of a police officer on duty and the resulting gap in benefits for his unmarried partner and their child have caused outrage. According to the Civil Service Pension Act, unregistered partnerships are not entitled to service accident benefits. For WELT columnist Henryk M. Broder, this is an “outrageous incident” and an example of “bureaucratic barbarism”.
While private donations show solidarity and €180,000 has already been collected, the police union is calling for nationwide reform. But so far there is no quick solution in sight. Broder criticizes the fact that laws have not been adapted to the realities of modern life and that responsibility is being shifted back and forth between the federal and state governments. The case shows the urgent need for reform of family and pension law in Germany.
