Adzebills were fascinating birds that once roamed New Zealand just under 600 years ago, but what were they really like?

It is now known that Adzebills are most closely related to the tiny flufftails of Africa! Genetics sure is a fascinating thing!

Hi I just subbed. Good to find another kiwi. You say in your about page to correct you if you are wrong or inaccurate about something so... New Zealand is not an Island Continent, Australia is.

That is true, but also false. Zealandia used to be a thing, but the definition of a continent isn't so set in stone.

I'm not the only one that is extremely frustrated by extinct animals that died close to us and not having a confirmed coloration?

I’m mostly frustrated that the north species wasn’t named the southern adzebill and the south species the northern adzebill

There's something strange and distictive about the beaks of native New Zealand birds.

I've only subscribed to you for a while, but watching this makes me feel I should have subscribed to you much earlier! Also... New Zealand mini-terror bird, damn I wish it could have survived till today... To think that this critter only just died out when the Hundred Years Wars were still rolling...

Honestly, this is the bird I most want scientists to resurrect through cloning, I really want to see some predatory flightless birds.

I would love for once for a scientist to name a northern species the southern adzebill and the southern species the northern adzebill. We need the mems.

It's also thought the Haast's eagle overtook this bird as top predator. Greatly thinning their numbers long before the Maori came.

Haven’t seen a source on that. Doesn’t seem to make much sense anyway given their different niches.

I saw it somewhere this morning when I was studying this. I'll see if I can find it and edit it in. Here it is. It's just after 3 minutes in. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4W4aGmVnLaYh8U

If anything the Eyles' harrier was closer in size, but their diet was composed of birds the Adzebills rarely,if ever ate,so they didn't seem to be competitively exclusive@@HenrythePaleoGuy

I know people will think lm crazy but l have seen one of these birds which l did at the time l thought l was seeing something very weird and at times since have seconded guessed myself ,but seeing this video has now made me sure it was this bird ; and no l don’t think it was something else l am a wildlife sculptor and l have been passionate about birds since l was a child and l can recognise birds in the wild ,which is something you have to develop after keen interest for years .l would love to share my encounter with it if anyone is interested .

West coast tropical?!? I'm guessing you are referring to the fact that it is classified as rain forest but sheesh, calling tge South Island tropical implies you have never been there

Pākehā need to stop guestimating the period when we settled NZ it’s irritating. My papa said Nukutawhiti’s waka landed at Hokianga in mid-september 1054 CE. I trust my papa as he knows the oral histories and he practices maramataka (Polynesian lunar-stellar-environmental-omen calendar system)
