Most people don't seem to realize that they weren't considered children anymore once they hit puberty... That was how it worked throughout most of human history. The idea that 18 is some magic number where children suddenly become adults is a modern novel concept in human history, and honestly, there's plenty of modern-day 30 year olds who are essentially children. I lived in Japan for 14 years. It's one of the safest places in the world. I have two kids, a girl and a boy, who are dual citizens and were born and raised there. Neither of them ever said they felt afraid to go out in public in any of the places we lived there, even Osaka. My own mother, who's a timid forest creature at home in the US, felt safe and secure taking walks alone after dark whether it be Nara, Kyoto, or Osaka. That youtuber obviously knows little to nothing about actual Japanese culture. Japan was the safest and most hospitable country I've been to, and I've been to several.
