I totally think you're right at the beginning when she says combat, Im ready for combat I think she is saying how she's going into it defensively and ready for something to go wrong, but when she says it at the end again after saying 'you could stay', I think she's saying it about being ready to fight for a good relationship to make it work. A really great song, and yes her pen game is insane. Some of the songs on Evermore and Folklore are the best I've heard from her, if you haven't heard many of them yet.

the line “i’ve been the archer i’ve been the prey” feels to me so similar with “i wounded the good and trusted the wicked” on daylight. its crazy how her mind works

"You could stay" I feel like starts to resolve this. Like we could actually share and accept all these things about each other and you could stay and those things, while they were important in the past, become growth points that are not relevant anymore.

I think you hit it on the head with this song, but my take on “The Archer” term… “I’ve been the archer, I’ve been the prey” is in her past relationship she was the one causing the pain/ending the relationship at times and other times she was the prey, someone else was causing her pain. She’s not innocent but she’s not villain.
