I went to Santa Monica, CA to ask random people to sing with me for my series called "Sing With Me." That's when I met Allie. While trying to find a song for Allie to sing, I found out that Allie writes her own songs. Since I really like the idea of guests on my show singing songs they write, I asked if I could listen and learn one of her songs. At first, she was apprehensive about having me do that. But eventually, she became open to me learning a song of hers called "Dear Mr. Rogers," a dedication to her favorite TV personality Fred Rogers. He was the host of the show called "Mr. Rogers Neighborhood." This show aired from 1968 to 2001, and Mr. Rogers passed away in 2003.
It took me about 3 minutes to learn her song, and we performed it in this video. I asked her how she felt after singing that song, and she said "I always feel happy singing." I'm glad I was able to give her that experience. (Here's the song ON KZbin: • Dear Mister Rogers - A... )
As a musician, I'm all about creating musical experiences that have people feeling happy and free, and that's why the "Sing With Me" series exists. Since 2018, I have asked thousands of random people to sing with me on camera. A lot of people have said no, some have said no initially but changed their minds to yes, and some have said yes right away. I ask these people to sing with one purpose: to create a way for them to experience a sense of happiness and freedom they did not feel before. And much of the time, this actually works (and that makes ME happy).

There is more to his video than meets the eye and I wanted to share it with everyone, here. A few months before Reggie stopped me on the Venice boardwalk and asked me to sing with him, I lost someone I had known all my life, who was a father figure for me. He happens to have been a very well-known composer/arranger. His name was Perry Botkin, Jr., and a friend pointed out that at the moment Reggie asks me to sing, there is a sign above my head that reads, "Perry's." He was always asking me why I wasn't writing songs, professionally, encouraging me to get out there with my music. I don't think this is a coincidence. Then, just before my birthday, last month, I thought to myself, wouldn't it be a nice birthday present if that video got me a song placement, or something. The next day, it blew up. I know Perry made this happen. He heard me and wanted to help. Never underestimate the power of those who have left us to change our lives. Perry has certainly changed mine. ❤🙏😀

Allie, you have a beautiful folk/country voice that is pure and unadulterated. I love it. I could listen to you all day. Thank you for sharing your song here. I think if you ever consider recording this again, I would add in that beat that Reggie did because it really adds to it. But the real talent is in your songwriting. It takes a special kind of person to write songs like that. I have also been abused by a narcissist, and it is very hard to come out of it. I'm so sorry that I came off sounding flippant in this video. I was nervous and wondering why this darling young man would want someone my age to sing with him. My favorite singers, BTW, are Justin Currie, Kirsty MacColl, Sam Phillips, Karl Wallinger, Carl Anderson -- people I didn't think he would know. But, I could have answered with my favorite songwriters, all of the aforementioned, but also people he would have known like Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, James Taylor, Jackson Browne, Stevie Wonder, Jason Isbell, Michael Penn, etc. I was thrown by the questions and my mind goes blank when I'm nervous! I am so honored that Reggie chose me and wish it showed more in my communications with him. He's very talented and doing such a beautiful thing!

@@AlisongsLA consider us adopted siblings. You can be sure I will be letting everyone, and anyone, know of you. These days most music has no depth coming from the performer, you can hear it, it is just so .... flat. Elvis sang from the depths of his soul, powerful and tender. Kris kristopferson, those his voice was rough, wrote from his life, it was real. Janis Joplin sang with what seemed like every cell in her came out in her music. And Alison Freebairn-Smith takes a piece of all of them and gives us her unique qualities making her just as special. Keep going in your direction, it's coming.

Really pretty song and I very much liked her choice of notes and singing voice. I think I react similarly to her, I get nervous in public situations and my mind goes blank so it feels easier to retreat to your comfort zone. We have people defending Europe in the U.S… calling themselves "American Patriots". They think that the people that were already here for 33,000 years, (32,500 years longer than they have) are foreign… and have the nerve to call them Aliens? We know… EVERYBODY knows that if you are white… you are of European descent. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. … but there IS something wrong with not including brown people… and criticizing the position they are in, while being the people that PUT THEM THERE! Black people DO matter. We have to say that because if the cops shooting them cold blooded & trying to tell a different story of the event isn't a well enough indication of how white people regard them TO THIS DAY IN 2022… then what else is? There's freaking Nazi's in Florida… rallying because the joker ex president says hospitals are letting them die for choosing to help other people first… when historically… FACTUALLY… the opposite is true. Statistics & data prove it. Supports it. … and without this knowledge… NAZI'S BUY INTO IT… as if Nazi's are a thing we allow in a land that they are not (or shouldn't be) welcomed! Nazi's. We entertain those people.

To date… your peers are the cause of catastrophic harm done to every other living thing that this earth provides… and you talk of "his peers" as if you know them? Would "his peers" be in the position they are in… if it wasn't for "your peers"? Get a life. Learn. Think critically. People don't fail on their own. On their own… they succeed. If there is failure… something… or someone outside their people is doing it to, or for them. Most likely… YOUR PEERS.

I learned English by listening to Mr ROGERS. He spoke clearly, slowly and enunciated words so well. I learned so much including being a “helper”

It’s really nice to hear a song about this gentle soul who wanted to make every child’s life a little easier. He passed but this song made him alive for awhile. A tribute to the neighbor we all need to make our lives a little lighter.
