In that final game, T90 mentioned how even though Hera collected more gold, Nicov out lasted him with gold, and he mentioned a few reasons why including the loss of those trebuchets in the north, but I think more than anything was the demolition ships. The value, especially gold-wise trading one ship on average for like 10 eagles or plumed archers was just insane! Let alone the fact that the early demolitions ships prevented an early push from Hera getting out of hand.

I don't know if it's a throw, but game one hera had no army and nicov gujara armored elephants, he pulls back at one point but that might have been his only mistake of the series as they shred buildings like nothing else (see sax nations cup)

I think maybe early on he wanted to do those eagle raids into the center and across the map, but I think maybe you're right and that it would make more sense not to. Then again, what's less discussed is that owning water on these maps allows for crazy scouting with your ships, so it's harder to hide units when you're going for a switch.
