It’s 11.1 because the it’s 10% less training time, not overall faster creation. If it was 50% less creation time, (e.g. from 10 seconds to 5 sec) you would produce two eagles in the time it would normally take to create one, hence it would be double as “fast”, = 100% faster. Same with 10% less creation time = 11.1% more produced eagles.

You should use a rec to cast during the game play phase. This way you can pause the game, explain the decisions that are available when playing as the civ and also pick a game that shows the civ strengths (or weaknesses).

What's your opinion on Aztec pikes (post imp)? Will they trade well against cav? I played a hill fort game against Lithuanians, they got map control in fuedel kept it into castle, so he had relics, but I think I had the better boom. My eagles traded horribly, so I went for a pike SR push to his monastery, once he didn't have the relics I tried eagles again and they traded more evenly than pikes. It never really felt like my pikes did well, but at least my eco could support the loses. That game made me favor Mayans over Aztecs, because arbs, halbs, and I feel like eagles are just as good with el dorado. Am I missing some with Aztecs?

Aztec eagles are better for raiding, mayans eagles are just a bit better in direct fight. Pikes are still very cost effective against cavalry, you have the +4 atack that you pay for your eagles, so it comes free sort to say to the pikes. They are still worse than regular halbs vs cavalry, of course, but you save 600 gold of this update. Aztecs are absolute destruction against infantry(their jaguars have 30 total atack vs infantry) and archers(strongest skirms, eagles, siege onagers), but you have to know your stuff to win against cavalry/elephant civs. Khmer, Byzantines are especially difficult. In that case, you have to go with monk, eagles and pikes mixed with them, if he is going heavier on archers then trade the pikes for skirms. You have options, that is sure.

As an Aztec player around 1100 elo, I feel cheated that the Aztec tutorial vid is actually a loss! But yeah, most of the information in the vid is actually solid enough so I'm not really complaining. I think your original plan was eagles / monks, but you were a bit complacent on the monk micro letting them get sniped like that. Good plan but unfortunate to get so little done vs those knights so they could just snowball from that point to an uncontrollable mass. As for those in the chat who were questioning Aztecs pikes, they're actually pretty strong and definitely will counter cavaliers in post-imp once Garland Wars is completed. But forget it if you're missing Garland Wars..

I would love your opinions on countering Heavy Cav, because against Teutons.... all of the normal strategies simply dont hold up as well because Teutons get conversion resistance AND additional Melee armor. I have been wracking my brain against the Extreme AI and the only times I beat the AI are when they dont Knight rush FC lol

Mayans for me are much stronger than Aztecs, infantry is usually rubbish in this game, Aztecs really lack mobility and strong units, also they don’t have any archer bonuses

I'm inclined to agree. Aztecs seem to be the weakest of the Meso civs when it comes down to brass tacks. MAyans get powerful eagles and cheap Archers, Incas have Halbs and anti infantry options, Aztecs have early aggro....

This game exactly highlights why aztecs are so easily countered (especially in my mid level elo) I just don't know what to do against massed knights like this. yeah ok but I can't micro them fast enough to convert them all...

The trick, I have found, is to mass eagles before they hit Castle and INSTANTLY go to their gold. Even if they FC Knights, if you have 8 eagles, and you can upgrade them AT ALL when hitting Castle Age, you should be able to snipe any knights that come out while you harass their gold. If you dont, then you have to immediately switch into pikes and monks and hope for the best...

I think, having played Aztecs against AI extreme, the goal is to all in Eagles before they can build knights. Once they have knights, player or AI, it becomes difficult unless you have significant Monk micro. I practiced against AI Teutons, who kept FC Knights and LS and the standard counters of Monks, eagles, jaguars were simply not enough. It took some ingenuity, luck and hyper aggression to beat them back. Also Eagles with +2 armor are nightmares for any ball of ranged because the eagles literally take 1 - 2 damage. I'm by no means talented enough to be correcting you in how to play the Aztecs, just throwing my observations from personal experience against "perfect" micro. Knights are the ultimate counter to any Meso civilization and planning for that above all else is key. If they are dumb enough to go archers, or infantry then its instant gg with eagles and monks, or skirms, or any other supporting unit.

Dear Hera, this series is fantastic and thank you for the aztec episode :) I do not think losing or winning changes the value of your civ presentation! I think for a lot of noobs like me, an advice on the strengths/uses of the eagle warriors would be useful. I play a lot of mayans, but I rarely use eagles because apart from raiding and sniping trebs, I have the feeling they are outclassed. Against archers, I prefer skirms, and against cav, I prefer halbs.

Love your videos Hera. Quick feedback. I get overwhelmed when you talk about the 1,000 different things you can do with Aztecs. I am assuming most of your followers are between 900 and 1,200 elo like me, and we love civs like Franks, Mayans, etc. that have a very clear game plan (i.e. scouts into knights, drush FC into archers, etc.). I am afraid of playing civs like Aztecs cause I don't know what to do. So I would suggest that instead of talking about all the things you could do, you would choose to show us one and stick to it, explaining it in detail. I am aware it would not be ideal because pro players need to adapt to the map, the other civ, what the opponent does, etc. but I think it would be better for people like me who would then be able to lose the fear on the civ and give it a try, following your instructions.

I think Aztecs dont have bad civ matchups as much as a clear weakness that they drop off in power compared to basically every other civ once the early Imp Eagle push is over. If the opponents survive this and still have eco left then it looks really bad for Aztecs bc they usually burn through most of their gold in the process. The hardest Matchup for Aztecs is propably Incas bc you cant really play Eagle Warrior in Castle Age but they can.

It's 100% teutons. Their conversion resistance makes any counter 100% more difficult. Incas may have anti infantry Slingers, but they are still susceptible to Eagles, let alone skirmishers who can out range them. That isn't to dismiss incas strengths, but I would rather face Incas as Aztecs, than Teutons.
