Produced by John and Faith Hubley for Paramount Pictures in 1966. Oscar winner for Best Animated Short. This was one of several astounding cartoons that came out of the Hubley Studios under Paramount Pictures. A run that lasted from until 1971,with their last animated short.

This was one of the few cartoon shorts, other than their own New York studio's output, that Paramount distributed during the mid-'60s (this was released in the summer of 1966). The music WAS taken directly from two tracks- "Spanish Flea" and "Tijuana Taxi"- featured on Herb and The Brass' 1965 album, "Going Places" [the opening excerpt was "Mexican Shuffle", from 1964's "South of the Border"].

This was the only cartoon that received an Academy Award for the best animated short, and it was the only cartoon that featured music by Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, including “Spanish Flea” and “Tijuana Taxi” along with “Mexican Shuffle” as the intro. This was long before MTV came along, and this was definitely a music video.

5:11 is the honk sound that ends "Tijuana Taxi," and that's probably where the "honk!" sound from The Angry Beavers came from. After all, the theme for that show simply channels, "Spanish Flea." Btw, I've been reading up on Paramount Cartoons between 1957 and 1967.

This Cartoon was made by John and Fath Hubley with music by Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass after being Fired from UPA due to his Communist connections during the Red Scare of the '50s. He also did some Animations for Watership Down afterward before his death. Fun Cartoon for sure.

I heard the first song, "Spanish Flea", in the 1996 movie "Striptease" with Demi Moore and Armand Assante. The other song, "Tijuana Taxi", was heard in the 1976 feature "Mother, Jugs and Speed" with Bill Cosby and Raquel Welch.

Thanks! Anybody have a less-compressed version of the video? I know it's old and not high-definition, but this version makes it almost impossible to see the flea, which is kind of the main point of the first half.

Mr and Mrs Hubley totally ruined the great music. I wonder how such a untasteful animation could win an Oscar the same year "Жил-был Козявин", "Человек в рамке", and "Pictures At An Exhibition" came out. Maybe these Hubleys were big friends of the committee as they had more Oscars for even worse animation.
