The #1 song on the Hot100 for the week ending October 20, 1979 was Herb Alpert's "Rise" 42 years ago on this day.
A&M Records was the creation of Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss in 1962 to record Herb Alpert & His Tijuana Brass who scored many classic 60's instrumentals but none hit #1 until Alpert recorded "This Guy's In Love With You" with his own voice as a valentine to his wife.
His second #1 hit was the surprisingly sexy instrumental "Rise" in 1979 right at the end of the disco juggernaut. That phat bass line is impossible to resist, so much so that it has been sampled and became a hip hop classic.
The origins of the "Rise"" sessions began in late 1978 when disco was king and still gaining popularity. Alpert almost succumbed to the "let's do disco updates of our hits" wave but thought better and changed direction abandoning the album project ten minutes into the session.
Cousin Randy Badazz (Alpert) then approached Alpert with some songs he had written and he took an immediate liking to one called "Rise". The demo had it at 120 BPM but Herb felt that slowing it down to 100 BPM would have a warming effect on dancers who could hug each other and dance real slow.
The recording session went really well with Alpert opining that "this was a #1 single". He was so right! At the time General Hospital was the hot soap opera with Laura having been raped by Luke. Why was "Rise" used to underline Laura's feelings whenever she thought of the rape? Anthony Geary who played Luke told the show producer that he should listen to the song, "it has a guttural, sensual beat". He agreed and it was played often on the show and it undoubtedly helped to push the song to the top of the charts on October 20, 1979 for one week.

YES!...You've made another classic!...grew up on Herb Alpert's albums as a little girl in the early 1970's...my Dad loved him and had all his albums from the 1960s...used to really laugh at the taxi horn in "Tijuana Taxi" - a really funny noise to have on a record I thought...sort of like Spike Jones' records from the 1940s (and my Ma loved the noises on his records as a little girl in the 40s) And I Loved (and still do) "Rise" in '79 - I was 12 - had the 45 of it as well, and 'wore' it out playing it - was too 'short' for me and wanted a 'longer' version of it - and now you've gone and done it! - Thank you!

The biggest difference between the original and this remix is the marimba has been brought forward, it was practically non existent and it adds so much Tijuana Brass sass to it! And you know I was going to break it down. The only thing I would add are more horns to funk it up even more. I almost did not even try this one the music files were not complete until one day.....It took me five hours from start to finish video to upload...I love the way it comes together and ends. It still hypnotizes and relaxes me each time.

Dang....I was a senior in High School in 1979....the memories being triggered by Mr. Alpert. Listeners of hip-hop and in particular Notorious B.I.G/Puff Combs almost certainly would not know who they sampled in their song Hypnotize which by the way was a worldwide hit in 1997. "Rise" and take a bow Mr. Alpert, you're a legend.

It's funny how music can bring you back to old times. I was 4 when this was released...but I remember this song playing on the radio constantly! Going from 1979 to the 1980...disco was declared dead...but it didn't die...they just didn't call it disco. The groove was changing into what is now called boogie...that slowed downed funked up R&B.

@I STAN Kim Jong-Un but Can't STAND Trump , it's not disco at all :) It's jazz-pop fusion, in my book. But who needs labels? It's a bad-azz tune that has stood the test of time. Plus, it didn't hurt for it to be sampled by the hip-hoppers in the '90s.
@richardboudeman8372

Call disco crap or dumb, but it is way better than the so-called dance music of today. Today it's just instrumental music with few words if any or a repeat of the chorus over and over and over and...... give me disco of the mid 70s to early 80s any day!!!

I recently watched a Herb Alpert documentary, so I'm revisiting a lot of his songs. I forgot how many great songs he has. It's a great watch for any music lover! This is NOT one the the forgotten ones for me. This and "Route 101" are frequently played by me! Now I need to see if you've worked your magic on Route 101. Definitely a feel good tune!

Love this song “Rise,” it has the right tunes and rhythm. Herb Albert and his band The Tijuana Brass were wonderful, playing different kind of musics which were all great hits back in the days. LOVE it, just love it. It brings great memories. And I still dancing, and this particular melody “Rise” is one of my favorite ones to listen to and to dance 💃 It gets me in the mood to dance faster! 😊 Woo-hoo! 👍👍🙌🙌👏👏♥️😍♥️😍♥️😍

It's great that you remember this music from that early in life. One of the first things ever recorded in my brain was the image of this album label with the stylized A&M logo, spinning around on mom's turntable, so this one is special to me. Good times!

This is really a beautiful mix, especially that intro! Instrumentals are everything!! And even though many associate this with Biggie, the really old folks think of Luke and Laura on General Hospital first. LOL

Well, I read the backstory after the fact. You actually gave me more detail on GH since I was only 11 at the time. The more interesting fact is it was initially a faster bpm! While it wouldn't have the same feel, that probably sounded pretty rad too. ☺

@@DivaInTheWoods Because the record industry did NOT state the speed on the 12 labels, it made work harder for DJ's. That is why Rise became a hit in its speeded up (45 rpms) in the UK.

@@debbiescott6732 I think if I had been a year or two older when it first came out, I'd probably associate it with vinyl too. That was when my parents started taking me to the local record store once a week to buy one $1 record. It's also when I had more exposure to the various genres. I know original vinyl had to be an absolute gift for you! I also started getting monthly "Song Hits" magazine. Man, those introduced me to so much music. Obviously, it wouldn't have helped with this song though. 🤣

A CNA was teasing this song. I politely told her that this was the anthem back in the day. Come on, who remember singing it with your boys, harmony, to impress the girls, on the way to school. You heard it blasting in the bars. You couldn't wait for it to be on the radio
