I was down in California September 2013 for my 50th high school reunion. If I had known about the open invitation to Herb Jeffries birthday, I wouldn't have missed it for all the tea in China. What an amazing life to have led. It's no secret, live a full life. Hitch your wagon to a star. He did; sang and worked with the very best. What truly wonderful times for entertainers and performers I am sorry I didn't get to see him in person, but God bless KZbin for this and all the other great stuff I still get to see.

Actually in the clip Herb is singing in the same key he sang it in back in 1941 - Eb major. Which is remarkable in itself!

This is amazing! His memory is better than mine and I'm only 55! Lol@! What a talent and great story-teller. Herbie Hancock was named after him. Fun fact.

Who'd have thought that there's only a one-degree separation between The Duke and Al Jolson, and that it's Herb Jeffries :-). Thank you for this window into time and for interviewing the truly towering Herb Jeffries.

I'm glad I got a chance to see him perform once at Whittier College in the LA area. He either had just turned 90 or was about to so it must have been about 2003. He seemed to be still going strong, about like he seemed in this video. He was known for a time as the "black John Wayne". They had a couple posters of him in cowboy attire on sale and I bought one and left it in my rental car when I flew home (shucks!). RIP Herb.

What a great performer. The laughable part of all this is that Herb was considered "black" in America. His parents were Irish and Italian, but as is true with a decent percentage of Southern Italians - and Sicilians - one of his forebears was Ethiopian. As we know, one drop of "black blood" in America is enough to put you on the other side of an insuperable racial barrier. That's why you see him singing with Duke Ellington rather than Glenn Miller or The Dorsey Brothers.
