@largol33t1 It wasn't Herbie that prevented them from escaping, they were have difficulty making the plane take off because of the heavy gold especially from what Mr. Shepherd said from 0:05-0:07 and from 1:14-1:16 and even the heavy gold prevented them from staying in the sky seen at 2:46.

I'd say in this movie, the engine sounded more powerful than it did in previous and following films. I question if that's really only 40 horse power under the hood, because it sounds A LOT more than that.

Series, and Herbie Rides again, he had the stock 40-Horse Power Engine, except when the jousting tournament. In Fully Loaded he had em all.

My grandmother always felt sorry for the poor plane, all the abuse it went through to the end. As someone who loved planes as a kid, this one was in agreement. Hopefully with some repairs, the plane could be put back together. Herbie got cut in half in the first film and he went through a lot in this movie, too. In the end, he's fixed, cleaned up and ready to race.

I think they used more than one. as a google search for the tail number N2291R Revealed it was an active tail number belonging to the Cessna 210, Plane had been used in Herbie Goes Bananas and "The Incredible Hulk" TV series. S04E03 Free Fall. Sadly, this plane is no longer in existence. On 5 September 1984, In Valencia, California N2291R was seen entering a slow roll maneuver. As the aircraft became inverted, the roll rate decreased, the nose of the acft dropped toward the ground & the plane crashed. No preimpact part failure or malfunction was found. Toxicological checks of the pilot's gastric contents, kidney fluids & bile showed a small amount of alcohol (.03%, .05% & .02%). The amount of alcohol due to putrefaction was not determined. The acft was not certified for aerobatics

@Kei Fox In some ways they deserved it especially first their car got destroyed because of a bull and now the plane was getting destroyed more and more. Regarding repairs, it probably was permanently damaged having first the tail gone, the wings gone, then the propeller gone, and last the wheels were gone. One way to show that it was permanently damaged was Mr. Shepherds disappointed look from what he said at 3:13.

That was awesome. The kid and Herbie the little beetle racer evenutally managed to defeat the villain by damaging the plane's tail, the little aeroplan lose the wings. Then the most exciting part come, Herbie ram the damaged and unflyable plane to crash, and defeat the villains as well.

RedMonkey I thought of that too but, I guess the reason Herbie didn't do anything like this here when Paco was kidnapped was because, they didn't have the heavy gold with them on the plane where they were able to take off easily. But here the heavy gold was preventing them from taking off and they were stuck on the ground getting problems from Herbie.

Plus, they tried taking off from 2:43-2:46 but the heavy gold weighed the plane down which definitely shows that they would never be able to take off as long as that heavy gold was in the plane. Especially that plane would never run and fly again after what happened at 3:56 even with the gold out of the plane now that the tail, wings, propeller, and wheels broke off.
