I'm just thinking about the range of emotions Diana must be going through. She thinks she's going crazy watching one car pull her car out of the water with no driver, then the car drives right up next to her car and both cars open their doors to touch. Then, when Herbie refuses to start, she has to quickly shift gears (pun not intentional, just popped into my head) from seeing this impossible spectacle to convincing Herbie to keep racing. Actually, I'd never seen this scene in it's entirety for a long time because the TV broadcast cut it from just before Jim gets back into Herbie to just before Wheelie shuts Herbie's door. It wasn't until the DVD release that I saw it in it's entirety.

I think Giselle was always 'alive' however she was a very reserved car unlike herbie who made it clear he was no normal car and was never afraid of driving himself in front of anyone. Giselle didn't want to spook Darcy fearing that she would disown her therefore Giselle behaved like a normal car. It was only until Herbie came along, Herbie showed Giselle how to be herself even if humans didn't want to believe. I think it was only this scene Darcy actually believed in cars having their own minds. After this scene I personally think Giselle would of been more comfortable around Darcy and Vice Versa. It would of been cool if after this scene Giselle opened her passenger door and Darcy got in allowing Giselle to do the driving by herself, both believing in each other.

Here's a theory. You could argue that the next two movies aren't "canon" think about it. According to the wiki in the next film (Herbie goes bananas) Jim has retired from racing. But what doesn't make sense is that despite retirement why would Jim get rid of Herbie after all they'd been through. Also there's no way Herbie would just leave Giselle just like that. After seeing how much they love each other. So theoretically speaking you could say that Herbie goes bananas and Herbie fully loaded are not in the same "universe" Think about it.

As much as I'd agree that you are right, especially on the Fully Loaded case, I still do think that Herbie Goes Bananas is at least a little bit canon. I mean at least they still do mention and make reference towards Herbie winning the Monte Carlo race. But don't also forget that Herbie also had a TV series, as well as a TV movie release, under the name the Love Bug, with Bruce Campbell in it. Plus Jim Douglas does make an appearance in the movie.

I guess they had to make up something when they couldn't get Dean Jones back for Herbie Goes Bananas... at least, I don't know if they asked him or not. In fact, the two main guys in Bananas are very similar to Jim and Wheelie, so I'm thinking it was probably originally scripted to include them, but they couldn't get Jones or Don Knotts, so they made two new characters instead.
