The nonverbal communication is unreal between them!! How on earth they are so in tune with each other is beyond me.

Captivating!

I saw them live w/ my mom once as a teeager, I believe it was in 1986 or '87 - I wish I could watch that now, with reasonably developed ears.

Incredible. One of the most Amazing videos and music I ever heard! Even deeper and more musical than most Corea and Hancock works. Incredible! Incredible!

Chick looks like he's got fake 'monster teeth' in his mouth (4'08"). Maybe because he's a MONSTER pianist - so to Herbie (of course). This is all about listening. If only more performers would LISTEN to their colleagues! It doesn't get better than this. Total communication. Mood changes - EVERYTHING.

There's another guy in the crowd wearing a shirt with '89 on it too, which is shortly followed by a camera-pan revealing a large sign above the 2 pianists with the words "Festival '89... Blue Note" at 4:01... I'd say it's settled, my dear Watson ;-) This festival is not in 1987.

This was so frickin' amazingly insane that my face resembled that of Herbie Hancock when Chick Corea came back with a mind-blowing line at 9:23. . . almost horrifying, but incredible!

@iPR0SH0T The harmony is atonal at that moment, there's no functional relationship between the notes he's playing other than that of the intervals between the individual notes that he is playing VERY fast. It almost sounds like his own funky version of 12 tone serialism.

@Voodomania It's called add 9 when there is no 7th
@Modes913 жыл бұрын
@Contrapunctus1 I totally agree. You often hear Paul Hindemith's influence in their playing as well. "Inventions and Dimensions" by Herbie is one of my all-time favorites. If you like modern jazz, contemporary classica, or both, it's a great one to hear often.
@TylerSocholotuik12 жыл бұрын
Yes it does actually. Saying C minor 9 implies that there is a 7th in there already, whereas C minor add 9 means that it is a C minor chord with a 9th added, but no 7th. There is no C minor 7 add 9 chord, it would simply be called C minor 9. However, it is just a username so there is no point in arguing over this. I posted that when I was first learning music theory so I wanted to act smart.

Could be me or the 39,000 plus persons blinded by the Jazz but Herbies T-shirt told me '89 but vid info tells me 1987 - now I'm no mathematical genius but last time I checked (none too long ago in fact) 7 came before 9! I mean I know these guys are ahead of there time but hold the phone Mary!!! Is there something Blue Note ain't telling us???

@iPR0SH0T it's a classic display of the 'God' 251, although he has altered it masterfully to some extent, it can exhibits all the distinguishable traits....this type of line can only be performed by a being who has ascended and risen to the rank of a God.

@Calatafimi yeah, he's of Spanish descent, but some people call that "latino" too, just check Antonio Banderas or Javier Bardem, and they are ok with that... Anyways, Corea really feels great connection with his Spanish roots, he has based many albums on Spanish-influenced fusion

Actually.. the ninth is played along with the 7th quite frequently. Especially in Jazz. Maybe in classical the 7th is taken out usually. You could look at it like this C-7add9 could also be EbMaj7 and used as a substitution for C-7add9. C Eb G Bb D = Eb G D C. So the C could be the 13th (or sixth) depending on what sound you want.

I bought the album Duo, which featured the new (and then revolutionary) Yamaha CP-70M electric grand piano. Obviously, that was not what Chick and Herbie used on this recording. The Yamaha was superior to a Rhodes in terms of sounding like a real grand piano, but it was still very inferior to an actual grand piano. Now that one can buy the Roland V-Piano Grand is around (as well as the Yamaha Avant Grand), there is no reason at all for a person to buy a CP-70, other than nostalgia. CORRECTION: The album I had said VSOP on the cover. It was a nice double album.
