CORRECTIONS: 1: Don't use anti-seize on lug nuts, clean threads and tighten to spec, anti-seize lubes the threads and causes a higher clamping force than intended. 2: It's better to open the bleeder on the caliper when compressing the calipers to prevent old fluid and contaminants being pushed back into the master cylinder. Then top off the master with fresh fluid. 3: If you are doing a "pad slap" (not turning the rotors) the next best thing is to scuff them with course sand paper to help break the glaze and help bed-in the pads. Thanks to the comments for suggesting these revisions. I had to do the brakes on the old E450 so I can use it to move some stuff from the old shop to the airport. I figured a tutorial could help some people fix their brakes on their Winnebago or box truck. I didn't sent notifications since it's not part of the airport saga.

Ahhhh, must be nice to be in rust-free Arizona. Around here in the Rustbelt, I have to use a heavily twisted wirebrush to clean the front caliper slider areas - UNDER where the stainless pad glides hit the caliper bracket. If there is rust under those glides, the pads will not slide and you'll have a hanging pad (they wont wear evenly). My F250 is older, with rear drums. For tightening/torquing, I don't do a criss-cross, since there are eight, I tighten every third nut/bolt. (tighten one, skip two tighten the third, skip tow, tighten the third, rinse and repeat.

I always refer to the service manual for the vehicle I'm wrenching on. The factory produced these for a reason - so proper maintenance procedures and specifications are used. Case in point anti-seize on lugs. I had a GMC Kodiak Top Kick C5500, the manual specified the use of copper anti-seize on the lugs when torquing the nuts to 250ft lbs to achieve the correct clamping force.

When compressing callipers, if you open the bleed screw with a bleed line on and a 1way valve, then old fluid will be pushed out as you wind them in.
@jeffreylynch32033 ай бұрын
Open the bleeder before you squeeze the caliper to prevent an ABS issue. Helps to get rid of old fluid also. Fluid absorbs water and should be changed once in a while.

@bwfvc77703 ай бұрын
Nice job, good attention to detail although I would've soaked the bearings in brake-clean or petrol to remove all the old grease before re-packing. When you jack up the vehicle, throw your wheel under your chassis rail and pack the height with wood. If your jack, "Leaks", toss it and get a new one with better specs. When a jack fails, it will possibly fail instantaneously and if you go back over the vid you will see at many times you would be pinned by the hand, foot or body, with no one to extricate yourself other than your wife. You prolly won't die but your new nickname will likely be Lefty. I'm very impressed by what you guys are doing as I have owned aircraft and every pilots dream is what you got but not many could do the work by themselves as you guys are doing. Also just wanting to say I really love your videos on the airport! I totally understand your sense of overwhelm when it comes to the number of things that need to be fixed. I have a lot of respect for you for finding the motivation to dig right into things. Maybe one day if the KZbin channel really takes off you could build a new house on the property.
