Every elephant needs a herd 💛🐘

As South Africa’s first and only dedicated elephant orphanage with a homestead for orphans integrated into a herd, our purpose is to care for every orphaned elephant that is brought into our care at HERD and help them rehabilitate and integrate into a stable and nurturing elephant herd. A herd that will provide them with the move and emotional security they need to survive, and to give them a second chance at a life with their own species.
Elephants are highly intelligent and an emotional species, with complex social bonds. The unusual structure of our rescued herd that are largely orphans themselves presents a unique solution for orphaned elephants in South Africa that need a home to ensure their holistic wellbeing and survival.
Being in the company of adults, sub adults and juvenile elephants during their developmental stages is highly beneficial for baby elephants. Phabeni is the latest orphan to benefit from this as he has joined the herd during the day from sunrise to set, in the wilderness.

First, you see this line of huge, powerful, and majestic creatures walking single file towards their destination; then you this little bitty boy strolling along confidently second in line❣️ When I saw that he could just about be hidden behind one of these giants legs, the happiest tears came to my eyes 🥹❣️ God bless the group of people who rescued him, and then brought him to you. Blessings to all for providing a soft, secure, and loving place for him to land. Beautifull to see, amazing to know. The story of this little guy , Phabeni right behind his mom Setombe. He is right where he belongs. Who would have tought that early november when he as a little tiny stremming, wounded and scared little one came into the care of HERD. You all did a amazing job, i know it sounds and looks so easyJet, but we don't see the hours off sleepness nights, the worry, de dokter and the drips with fluids and blood. well, bulls don't lead. matriarchs do. Phabeni has to look for another position in the herd. maybe godfather to young orphans in 15yrs or so.

Elephant family groups are led by female matriarchs. Bulls leave the family group when they reach adulthood, around 12-15 years of age. Though, there is also a hierarchy within smaller groups of bulls, where the older, stronger and more experienced bulls stand at the top.
