8:00 I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but a lab tech. I can't argue with that logic. Scientific research requires funding, and funding requires donors. Most funding comes from corporations because there aren't many individual philanthropists with huge amounts of money willing to invest in science. Corporations are mainly interested in profits, so they invest in what they believe will give them the most return. Eradicating something bad gives limited return in the short term, but keeping people on the hook paying a monthly fee for life guarantees megabucks in the long term. One of my former professors has a patent for a method of breaking down plastics, which could benefit the environment in a major way. He's never been able to get funding because there's no profit in making plastic vanish. The saddest lesson I learned in college was its pointless to aim to help people. There are simply no jobs to be had in any field where there is no profit. 😢

Maybe, but fortunately, some people will strive to improve things for people because it is the right thing to do! Insulin is not patented because it's discoverer/inventor thought that it was something the world needed. Only America seeks to make a profit on it. Volvo invented seat belts for cars and didn't patent the idea so that everyone could benefit. The NHS is not run for profit, it is run to make sick people well again, just like every other healthcare system in the world, except America's of course. We have a saying in the UK; "Don't judge other's harvest by your own half-bushel" That is to say, don't judge everyone by your own standards.

What actually happened was that he was sitting on the beast's back while his friends took photos. Getting off, he slipped in the mud at the edge of the pond and fell. The hippo turned on him and bit him in half. Hippos are vegetarian...
@rafarequeni822Күн бұрын
Vegetarian in animals only means "they aren't predators". If they can get their teeth on meat, they will. You won't find a horse eating the corpse of a cow, because they can't tear the meat off - and they don't eat dead animals - but if a duckling happens to cross over them while they're eating grass, they may swallow them whole.

The Boom Town Rats had a hit with a song about Brenda Spencer and her reply to why she did it. Written by Bob Geldof and Johnnie Fingers, according to Geldof, he wrote the song after reading a telex report at Georgia State University's campus radio station, WRAS, on the shooting spree of 16-year-old Brenda Ann Spencer, who fired at children in a school playground at Grover Cleveland Elementary School in San Diego, California, on 29 January 1979, killing two adults and injuring eight children and one police officer. Spencer showed no remorse for her crime; her explanation for her actions was "I don't like Mondays. This livens up the day".

Hippos are herbivores and eat mainly grass, so no, it didn't eat him. Bit him maybe, but there was no eating.
@rafarequeni822Күн бұрын
It didn't eat him entirely. But it did bite him, and swallowed. That's the definition of 'eating'. Like most large herbivores, 'hervibore' just means 'I don't hunt', not 'I don't eat meat'. Hippos have been found eating carcasses of other animals floating in rivers (including other hippos).
@EleonorS6 сағат бұрын
@@rafarequeni822 How do you know it swallowed? What I mean is, hippos aren't out hunting humans to consume them. They're fiercely territorial and will definitely kill to protect their territory. I know they have been seen scavenging a few times, but otherwise they're up on land grazing at night.

@@EleonorS Uffff... I thought I had read something about the autopsy, but I can't find it now, maybe I'm mixing things up from other cases of attacks by "pets" people shouldn't have. In any case, you're right that hyppos as a general case they don't have an appetite for meat, they may eat it when hungry and the posibility presents itself, but not as a general rule. In this particular case, it seems that Humphrey bit its owner more than once, which makes the probability of eating pieces of him higher, but not a lot of him in any case. I don't have any details of the (extremely gory) autopsy, but it seems that they found the body mostly complete.

I would like some information, if anyone knows. Did the Arab peoples refer to Allah (God) before Mohammed?
@anonygent3 күн бұрын
I can help you out. The Arabs were polytheistic and "allah" just meant god, lower case. There were many allahs/gods. Some speculate that the one Mohammad picked out to be his one Allah was a moon god of the Arabs, similar to the Canaanite god Baal, which would make Allah closer to the Christian Satan than the God of Abraham. Mohammad's claim that he and the other Arabs were descendants of Abraham's other son, Ishmael, is of course pure fiction.
